Recently, the National Sheriffs’ Association withdrew its resistance to the cryptocurrency Clarity Act, having previously cautioned that the prospective legislation might assist unlawful actors.
In a Thursday correspondence addressed to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the organization stated it was shifting its position to neutral due to the matter’s intricacy.
Several legislators had anticipated voting on the Clarity Act during August. Following a postponement, a vote is now scheduled to take place this month. The legislation will create a system for differentiating between digital assets categorized as securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins—rules that the digital asset sector has demanded for an extended period.
The communication from NSA President Sheriff Troy Wellman and Executive Director Justin Smith stated, “Given the complexity of the legislation and the number of important details that remain under consideration, the NSA is changing its position on the Clarity Act to neutral.”
The statement continued, “At this time, we believe the most appropriate course is to step back and allow the legislative process to proceed to establish a clear, effective, and much needed regulatory framework.”
Previously, the NSA had cautioned that the bill could generate regulatory and anti-money laundering vulnerabilities by releasing specific cryptocurrency developers and infrastructure entities from money transmitter obligations.
Although the House of Representatives approved the measure last year with robust bipartisan backing, the Clarity Act has experienced a stalemate throughout much of 2026. The banking sector voiced worries regarding stablecoin yield, and certain politicians asserted that enhancements must be implemented concerning ethics.
A revised version of the Clarity Act was presented in July that tackled several of these worries by prohibiting government officials and their relatives from creating or endorsing cryptocurrency.
On Friday, pro-crypto senator Cynthia Lummis posted that the “bipartisan bill” supplies “law enforcement real tools to fight the illicit finance crimes hurting hard working Americans.”
Prominent financial institutions, legislators, and enterprises have expressed backing for the newest version of the legislation, though certain Republicans have claimed that Democratic politicians are intentionally playing politics and stalling the measure.
