Crypto restaking protocol Renzo Protocol has rebranded as Renzo Finance while venturing into onchain structured yield products, starting with a basis trade offering on Hyperliquid.
Although structured instruments represent a multi-trillion-dollar market within traditional finance, Renzo points out that equivalent tools remain scarce onchain because they prove complicated to configure, track, and administer. Renzo seeks to bridge that divide by streamlining these methods for decentralized participants.
How Renzo Basis works
The inaugural onchain yield offering from Renzo Finance is dubbed Renzo Basis. The utility is engineered to automate a basis trade, a mechanism that purchases an asset in the spot marketplace while simultaneously opening an equivalent short position in perpetual futures.
This approach aims to minimize vulnerability to asset price fluctuations since the long and short legs balance each other out. Participants accrue yield derived from the funding rate, which is a fee exchanged among perpetual futures speculators.
“A basis trade generates yield by maintaining two contrasting positions simultaneously: long by acquiring the asset within the spot market, and short by an identical volume utilizing a perpetual future,” Lucas Kozinski, head of Renzo Labs, the engineering arm behind Renzo, shared with The Block. “Because both sides neutralize one another, the price trajectory of the asset is irrelevant. What remains is the funding rate, a charge traders remit hourly to sustain their side of the contract. That exact charge constitutes the yield collected by users.”
Renzo notes that the tool automates the workflow via a trio of safeguards, incorporating a hedge guard, a yield guard, and a safety buffer.
When queried about whether the offering leverages AI for automation, Kozinski clarified that it currently does not rely on artificial intelligence. He explained that Renzo Basis employs Hyperliquid’s agent wallets, also known as API wallets, which allow a program to execute trades on behalf of a user without retaining custody of the assets. Renzo leverages these wallets to construct and oversee the mechanism, featuring protections that can be tailored by the individual.
Competition and next products
Renzo enters an ecosystem where Ethena and Bitwise’s Superstate, among other entities, currently furnish basis trade yield solutions. Kozinski highlighted that Renzo’s differentiator lies in its product being entirely onchain, self-custodial, and fully customizable.
“The distinction is that Renzo’s solution is completely onchain as opposed to offchain, features self-custody rather than third-party custody, and permits the depositor to control their risk instead of relying on centralized or pooled risk,” Kozinski remarked. “This signifies that a depositor can select the exact asset, platform, and risk parameters they wish exposure to, as opposed to depositing into a pool managed by a centralized intermediary that executes every decision on their behalf.”
As adoption surrounding real-world assets accelerates, a “massive growth opportunity” will emerge for onchain structured instruments and advanced yields, according to Kozinski.
Renzo Basis is debuting on Hyperliquid and will initially accommodate BTC and HYPE. All Hyperliquid assets boasting both spot and perpetual markets are anticipated to follow suit, Kozinski stated. Furthermore, Renzo intends to scale toward additional DeFi ecosystems, with Lighter on Robinhood positioned next on its roadmap. He mentioned that such a launch would introduce an onchain equity perpetual basis trade.
Additionally, Renzo is testing alternative structured offerings, comprising autocallables and growth notes, Kozinski noted. Autocallables represent structured financial instruments that distribute regular coupons and automatically settle early if a reference asset satisfies a predefined performance threshold. Growth notes empower investors to track upside asset performance while supplying a degree of downside preservation.
