Cross-chain liquidity network Symbiosis announced the retrieval of 15 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $1.1 million, following a Bitcoin bridge security breach on Friday.
As stated in a Friday post on X, Symbiosis managed to secure 15 Bitcoin (BTC) within a multi-signature wallet managed by the team, while confirming that all pathways continue functioning normally. The breach targeted the native Bitcoin bridge of Symbiosis, which stays temporarily suspended.
The perpetrator’s address generated 46.1 billion unsupported tokens via the platform’s Bitcoin bridge, yet secured actual profits of 4.3 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) valued at $336,000, based on findings from blockchain security firm Blockaid, which initially reported the security incident on Friday. The project has not detailed how the retrieved Bitcoin connects to the $336,000 in gains linked to the malicious actor.
Symbiosis is currently providing a 20% reward to anyone supplying details that result in the retrieval of funds. The project previously extended a 20% white-hat reward for the hacker to give back the capital, though the time limit lapsed on Sunday. The protocol indicated it will soon publish a reimbursement plan for impacted liquidity providers.
DefiLlama estimated roughly $336,000 was lost during the incident, but the protocol has not yet released its official calculation of total damages.
Bridge exploits continue testing DeFi
Back in June, Secret Network encountered an infinite mint vulnerability that siphoned roughly $4.6 million out of the system.
During May, the Verus-Ethereum bridge suffered a drained balance through a fabricated cross-chain transaction breach amounting to 5,402 Ether, valued near $11.6 million at that time. The infiltrator sent back 75% of the pilfered capital and retained roughly 1,350 Ether, equivalent to $2.8 million, 24 hours after the protocol proposed a 25% white-hat reward.
