Ethereum Institutional has voiced its backing for the initiative led by Ethlabs aimed at shortening block durations and building a speedier Ethereum network to counter rising pressure from competing chains.
In a Friday post on X, the non-profit entity declared, “Make Ethereum faster,” pointing out that accelerating block intervals is crucial as “more institutional activity moves onchain.”
Ethlabs released a publication on Thursday featuring statements from 20 decentralized finance (DeFi) creators who demonstrated widespread backing for EIP-8198, alternatively termed “Quick Slots,” which aims to shorten Ethereum’s block duration from 12 seconds down to 10 seconds initially.
Alternative distributed ledger networks are also pursuing comparable block speedup measures. Earlier on Monday, a significant portion of Zcash token holders voted in favor of lowering the network’s goal block interval from 75 seconds down to 25 seconds.
Back in August, Solana decreased its slot duration from 400 milliseconds to 350ms. Furthermore, during June, the Solana Foundation outlined strategies to drop slot speeds from 400ms to 200ms, stating that the change would enhance responsiveness and speed up transaction validation across the decentralized network.
EIP-8198 was drafted in March and put forward for incorporation into the Hegotá upgrade during the Ethereum core developer assembly held on August 6. Ethlabs reported that it was integrating the upgrade specifications into the primary codebase alongside evaluating prospective downstream effects to assist the proposal in properly qualifying for the Hegotá release schedule.
Ethereum engineers might commence the rollout of Hegotá near the end of 2026, following Glamsterdam, which is widely considered among the most vital network upgrades of the year, built to boost throughput and reinforce the primary network layer.
