The administration of Donald Trump is gearing up for a significant overhaul of financial markets as round-the-clock trading, onchain finance, and tokenization take center stage.
Michael Selig, Chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, stated that oversight bodies must ready the markets for widespread tokenization while simultaneously adapting existing frameworks to accommodate emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.
During a U.S. Treasury Market conference hosted at the New York Fed on Tuesday, Selig remarked that the upcoming ten years will likely introduce more transformations to financial systems than the past several decades put together, driven by innovations such as round-the-clock trading, onchain finance, and tokenization.
He affirmed that the United States will maintain its leadership position.
He further noted that the entire Trump administration has already established the foundation to sustain this leadership by welcoming innovation, fostering competition, appropriately scaling regulations, and preserving the confidence that has established American markets as the global benchmark.
Throughout the past year, the regulatory body has released guidance and solicited public feedback regarding uninterrupted 24/7 trading within energy derivatives markets, demonstrating its expanding focus on continuous marketplaces. Additionally, back in February, the CFTC broadened its approved collateral roster to encompass stablecoins originating from national trust banks.
Selig mentioned that the CFTC intends to discover additional methods to foster responsible stablecoin utilization among clearinghouses, exchanges, and other market participants.
At the same time, the Securities and Exchange Commission, a sister agency to the CFTC, published its long-awaited innovation exemption during the previous week to accommodate the onchain exchange of tokenized equities. Both regulatory organizations are pressing forward following the stall in the Senate of a comprehensive legislative bill aimed at governing the cryptocurrency sector.
