This finalizes the derivatives architecture for Coinbase, enabling the platform to internally list, broker, and clear fully backed instruments.
On Monday, Coinbase (COIN) obtained authorization from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to officially register Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO).
This achievement essentially finalizes the exchange’s comprehensive suite of compliant derivatives tools, building upon its current designated contract market (DCM) and futures commission merchant (FCM) registrations.
“For the first time, we have the ability to independently issue and clear fully backed contracts,” Coinbase stated in an official release on Monday. “This translates to quicker product innovation, streamlined workflows, and the agility to introduce novel regulated offerings over time.”
Based on CFTC guidelines, the Coinbase clearinghouse—characterized by the firm as USDC-native—is only authorized to clear fully collateralized swaps, futures, and options on futures. Coinbase Clearing is barred from handling leveraged offerings, which will continue to route through external clearing collaborators.
“We will maintain our relationships with current partners to facilitate specific offerings, such as our margined derivatives division and our upcoming rollout of single-stock perpetuals,” Coinbase explained.
The updated infrastructure could eventually empower Coinbase to accommodate a constrained HIP-3 market on Hyperliquid, mirroring the strategy that Payward, the parent company of Kraken, revealed earlier in the month alongside Bitnomial Exchange and NinjaTrader Clearing. Under that contemplated framework, Bitnomial would handle the listing and clearing of fresh contracts for qualified American users, NinjaTrader Clearing would maintain client portfolios, and the decentralized order book of Hyperliquid would execute the matching.
However, this possibility is purely hypothetical since Coinbase Clearing is restricted to fully funded instruments, and Coinbase has not announced any intention to roll out a HIP-3 market. Furthermore, Payward’s initiative is still awaiting clearance from regulators.
