On Wednesday, DogeOS, which functions as an application layer for Dogecoin, released its public testnet as a zero-knowledge rollup aimed at delivering EVM-compatible smart contracts to the network, utilizing DOGE as the primary token for gas fees.
This initiative is engineered to empower use cases such as decentralized trading, borrowing and lending, stablecoins, prediction markets, and gaming, all while anchoring its state back to the Dogecoin network. Right now, DogeOS relies on a trusted execution environment, external validators, and a restricted sequencer to maintain network security, whereas an upcoming potential update to Dogecoin Core would enable Dogecoin miners to independently validate its execution proofs.
Dogecoin does not natively validate these ZK proofs at the moment, explained DogeOS CEO Jordan Jefferson to The Block. Rather, bridging state updates demands legitimate proofs combined with sign-offs from a majority of the validator collective alongside a TEE signer.
Jefferson stated that their current priority is the public testnet, which provides creators adequate time to construct and experiment with applications while they test the network reliability. He added that they will announce the mainnet schedule upon hitting upcoming development targets.
The creators of the MyDoge wallet are behind DogeOS, which previously secured a $6.9 million investment round spearheaded by Polychain Capital back in May 2025. Subsequently, in July of that year, the DogeOS creators put forward a proposed Dogecoin Core modification intended to introduce native ZK-proof validation directly into Dogecoin, though that enhancement has not been integrated yet.
Back in May, Jefferson mentioned to The Block that DogeOS was developing this application framework to broaden the Dogecoin network beyond its past dependency on Elon Musk. The debut of the testnet now supplies developers with an active sandbox to build and evaluate programs using that framework.
Timothy Stebbing, who serves as a director for the Dogecoin Foundation, shared in a Wednesday press release that he has spent five years urging individuals to give Dogecoin a chance and develop within its community. He expressed his expectation that DogeOS will act as a launchpad for an influx of fresh utility development and serve as an entry point for the upcoming one hundred startups building on Dogecoin.
At the time of writing, Dogecoin (DOGE) was valued at approximately $0.094, reflecting a 60% decline over the previous twelve months.
