According to anonymous sources cited by CNN and other news outlets on Friday, President Donald Trump is slated to designate US Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as the fresh artificial intelligence czar.
As previously covered by Cointelegraph on Sept. 20, Trump had outlined plans to establish an “AI Force” comparable to the Space Force alongside naming an artificial intelligence leader. The commander-in-chief shared on Truth Social that this upcoming initiative aims to supervise the rapidly scaling AI industry without imposing burdensome rules that could hinder progress.
The moves by Trump arrived following multiple public cautions regarding the possible risks associated with artificial intelligence.
On Sept. 12, Cointelegraph noted that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei authored a three-phase recommendation to moderate the progression rate of artificial intelligence, warning that unmonitored growth could “outrun our ability to understand and control these systems.”

Following that, Cointelegraph reported that Anthropic selected Accenture as an integrated assessor to assist in moderating the advancement speed of AI, thus executing the initial phase set forth in Amodei’s blueprint.
OpenAI head Sam Altman and SpaceX leader Elon Musk expressed favorable views toward Amodei’s proposal, whereas Nvidia chief Jensen Huang disagreed, contending that such oversight is unnecessary.
Earlier on Tuesday, Cointelegraph highlighted that Trump brought together top artificial intelligence and technology executives at the White House to execute a pledge promising to “self-police” the development and models of their respective firms.
Clayton led SEC during Trump’s first term
CBS News initially broke the story that Clayton stood as the leading candidate for the artificial intelligence post. Nevertheless, a representative for the White House informed CBS that any formal announcement would originate straight from the president, categorizing the prior stories as speculative.
Informants informed CNN that Clayton previously directed the Securities and Exchange Commission throughout Trump’s initial administration, acted as temporary US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and is anticipated to retain his existing position as director of national intelligence.
The Senate voted to confirm Clayton in July to direct the intelligence apparatus.
CNN noted that during his confirmation proceedings, when questioned about artificial intelligence, Clayton characterized the technology as a “game changer” presenting both “an opportunity but a threat.”
Crypto czar David Sacks argues AI threat is Orwellian, not Terminator
In March, Cointelegraph detailed that venture capitalist David Sacks—who assumed the role of a special White House official under Trump during the prior year—concluded a 130-day run serving as the crypto and artificial intelligence czar. Under federal guidelines, these distinct government personnel are restricted to a maximum of 130 working days inside any 12-month span.
During a March interview with Bloomberg, Sacks explained, “We’ve now used up that time,” while adding that he would persist in supplying policy advice concerning various technology sectors as co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
