Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Microsoft stand among multiple American stocks that could soon become accessible for trading around the clock via an upcoming blockchain-based marketplace established by digital asset platform OKX and the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.
A regulatory filing released by OKXICE, a collaborative venture connecting OKX alongside Intercontinental Exchange (the owner of the NYSE), outlined greater than sixty individual equities slated for tokenization and detailed the operating mechanics of this emerging marketplace.
The roster features prominent corporations like Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet, alongside crypto-associated entities such as Coinbase, Circle, Robinhood, Strategy, and Securitize. Additional participants mentioned are JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Walmart, Netflix, Reddit, and Boeing.
Nevertheless, appearance within the filing does not guarantee that every single asset will ultimately trade on the venue, because corporations retain the right to contest the inclusion of their equities during a thirty-day window. For instance, the filing notes that Cerebras raised objections regarding its designation.
“No symbol is a given,” analysts from TD Securities highlighted in a Monday publication.
For market participants, understanding tokenization simply involves picturing a conventional stock mirrored by a digital token capable of purchase and transfer across a distributed ledger.
Consider Nvidia as an example. Rather than acquiring the equity through a conventional brokerage channel and routing execution via traditional market infrastructure, an investor utilizing OKXICE purchases a digital token that confers ownership rights to an actual Nvidia share.
According to the regulatory paperwork, the underlying equities are preserved by a licensed broker-dealer on a one-to-one basis, ensuring every single Nvidia token corresponds directly to a single Nvidia share. Furthermore, holders of these tokens secure the standard economic and governance benefits tied to the underlying security, including dividend disbursements and voting participation.
How it works
Rather than settling transactions in fiat currency, participants on the newly formed network execute purchases and sales of tokenized shares utilizing digital dollars known as stablecoins. OKXICE intends to support USDC, USDT, and USDG, which are three cryptographic assets engineered to peg consistently to a $1 valuation.
Additionally, the traditional order-matching mechanism pairing buy bids directly with sell offers will not be utilized. Instead, equity tokens and digital dollars reside inside decentralized liquidity reserves where participants interact directly. Acquiring Nvidia tokens removes them from the reserve while depositing digital dollars, consequently driving values upward, whereas liquidating positions executes the reverse.
Such liquidity mechanisms, recognized in the digital asset sector as automated market makers or AMMs, apply algorithmic guidelines to establish execution valuations for participants. Advanced iterations can also empower professional institutional desks to dynamically modify pricing metrics and inventory depths, thereby encouraging the marketplace to function similarly to conventional exchanges.
TD Securities noted that these automated market makers might manifest in various formats. A standard setup, for instance, calculates values dynamically via mathematical equations reflecting the asset balances inside a specific reserve. Conversely, the financial institution believes actively managed structures could carry greater significance for equity trading.
“We see Prop AMMs and managed Multi-Pool Venues as much more consequential than conventional AMM models,” analysts emphasized, asserting that liquidity providers who actively calibrate quotes and inventory balances are “less likely to be picked off by stale prices.”
Within that architecture, one market participant establishes quotes utilizing live market data alongside proprietary inventory, while another might consolidate multiple liquidity pools into an ecosystem mirroring a traditional equity exchange.
This framework parallels the architecture already deployed by decentralized digital asset exchanges, though OKXICE intends to implement it specifically for equities. Settlement operations will transpire on XLayer, a blockchain engineered by OKX, while the underlying liquidity mechanics leverage integration structures originating from the decentralized exchange Uniswap.
A major distinction remains present: marketplace activity does not halt when traditional Wall Street trading hours conclude.
OKXICE schedules continuous operations spanning seven days a week, inclusive of overnights and weekends.
Consequently, participants can conceptually purchase or liquidate tokenized Nvidia units on a Sunday afternoon, despite Nasdaq markets being closed for traditional shares. Pricing on this alternative platform derives strictly from internal supply and demand dynamics across its proprietary liquidity vaults rather than replicating the final recorded closing figure from Nasdaq.
Moreover, the ecosystem remains closed to anonymous accounts. Prior to executing transactions, participants must successfully clear formal identity verification protocols and anti-money laundering evaluations, per regulatory specifications.
Therefore, while the investment vehicle appears conventional—featuring tokens backed by Nvidia shares complete with dividend and governance entitlements—the underlying infrastructure operates quite differently.
‘Limited’ relevance
Whether market participants ultimately embrace this offering remains an open question, however.
TD Securities explained that it still observes “limited near-term relevance for institutional investors,” largely because American investors already enjoy efficient entry routes to listed equities. The firm likewise underscored modest enthusiasm from corporations regarding the tokenization of their shares alongside lingering ambiguity surrounding regulatory boundaries.
Because the SEC relief applies for a five-year period rather than establishing permanent legal structures, prominent financial institutions might hesitate to allocate capital toward connecting their institutional systems to an infrastructure whose regulatory guidelines could subsequently shift.
The crucial test involves determining whether sufficient traders and institutional market makers participate to maintain tight price synchronization with traditional equities, especially during overnight hours and weekends when conventional U.S. markets remain shut.
Nevertheless, this initiative represents the inaugural evaluation of genuine corporate and trader appetite for tokenized shares. “The biggest takeaway is NOT that OKXICE is launching another tokenized-stock venue,” stated Harvey Li, founder of Tokenization Insight.
“It is that OKXICE could become one of the first real-world tests of which tokenization model can scale U.S. equities onchain the fastest, and ultimately become the dominant market structure.”
