Bitcoin BTC$83,768.40 alongside other major assets is trading lower today, yet zooming out reveals a broader trend that is far more level than the daily tape indicates: valuations have remained virtually static over the past two weeks.
Certain observers note that this choppy price action forms part of a normal stair-step rally, which could potentially clear a path toward crossing the $87,000 threshold soon.
The central question is what catalyst might transform this temporary lull into a decisive breakout above the current range, with the answer lying in the exact driver behind September’s upward surge: robust spot ETF capital inflows.
United States spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds pulled in approximately $2.6 billion throughout September, with the seven-day period concluding on Sept. 25 alone accounting for roughly $2.39 billion of that monthly total, while inflows reached a peak of nearly $999 million on Sept. 21. Nevertheless, buyer interest has cooled off drastically since then, as these ETFs generated $241 million last week and merely $28 million thus far this week.
“I read the current move as evidence that the ETF bid that carried September has not yet returned strongly enough to offset renewed macro pressure. ETF inflows above roughly $300 million a session for several sessions (my threshold rather than a market one) would be an important signal that institutional demand is returning,” Oliver Carding, head of marketing at Tesseract Group, shared via email.
Martin Lee, who serves as head of content and data insights at DWF Labs, noted that substantial daily fund additions carry more significance than extended periods of steady inflows that collectively amount to only a couple of hundred million dollars.
“Looking across the year, we’ve had 93 out of 190 (48%) trading days be negative while still seeing net $1.2B of inflows. Longer-term (week/month) size of flows is more important compared to daily, which is almost a coin flip this year, but definitely something worth monitoring to see how the situation progresses,” he explained.
Simultaneously, alternative categories of purchasers continue to accumulate.
“Investors appear to be using periods of weakness to accumulate and dollar-cost average alongside institutional buyers,” stated Paul Howard, senior director at Wincent. “Many market participants are continuing to target Bitcoin at $100k+.” Stay alert!

Today’s signal

The visual data illustrates daily fluctuations of the Binance ether-bitcoin trading ratio using candlestick charts. Superimposed upon the graphic is the Ichimoku Cloud, which functions as a momentum metric created during the 1960s by a Japanese journalist.
This ratio has dropped underneath the Ichimoku Cloud boundary, serving as an indicator of negative momentum shifts. Provided that this breakdown is sustained, it signals that ether’s bullish trajectory relative to bitcoin has concluded.
Immediate support levels are defined by the yellow trendline originating from the low of 0.03059 recorded on Sept. 4. A subsequent decline beneath this line would further validate the prevailing bearish sentiment.
