Cryptocurrency trading and market-making organization GSR is pledging $100 million toward a brand-new onchain credit enterprise, wagering that vaults are set to occupy a much larger role in how institutional investors deploy digital and tokenized assets.
The undertaking, named Hare, is being developed alongside liquidity distribution network Turtle to establish and administer onchain vaults. GSR’s multi-year pledge will primarily manifest as a credit facility, injecting its funds into Hare’s offerings as foundational liquidity ahead of external investors arriving.
This initiative unfolds as vaults grow into a foundational component of decentralized finance. Participants commit funds into a smart contract, while a supervisor, known as a curator, determines how to allocate that capital across borrowing and lending protocols as well as alternative strategies. Practically speaking, this transforms funds sitting idle in a wallet into viable collateral or a generator of returns.
This structural model gains increased significance as tokenization expands throughout traditional financial sectors. An expanding volume of funds, commodities, and additional assets are transitioning onto blockchain infrastructure, generating a robust demand for mechanisms capable of putting those holdings to work rather than merely storing or trading them. By July, statistics from Vaults.fyi indicated that there were $8.6 billion in assets distributed across 788 curated vaults, attaining 1.4 million users.
"GSR’s contribution functions as deployment capital," Hare CEO Connor Milner communicated to CoinDesk in an official statement. "Issuers secure liquidity starting on day one, and allocators observe GSR’s personal capital inside the identical vaults holding theirs."
Hare will debut with a pair of solutions driven by the borrowing and lending protocol Aave. Hare USD Earn will accept prominent dollar stablecoins within a unified vault, whereas Hare Gold Earn will enable owners of Paxos’ tokenized gold assets PAXG and PAXGy to accrue earnings. Paxos Labs is collaborating on the gold-based offering.
The framework is already attracting additional institutional entities. Digital asset lender Two Prime recently unveiled a bitcoin lending vault structured on Pareto, backed by $10 million. Simultaneously, Galaxy Digital introduced Galaxy Curator, a Morpho-powered vault platform granting Fireblocks’ 2,400 institutional customers access to onchain yield strategies.
Hare emphasized that its concentration will center on the credit dimension of that equation, carefully evaluating collateral, counterparties, and the resilience of positions under adverse market conditions.
Milner previously held the position of senior director at Re7 Capital, a London-based decentralized finance hedge fund.
