Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that while the digital asset sector must treat cryptographic risks stemming from artificial intelligence-driven mathematics with gravity, users should avoid scrambling to transfer their capital into new wallets.
Through a Wednesday post on X, Buterin mentioned that he advises against panic-driven asset relocation. Although storing funds inside addresses that have never executed a transaction serves as a wise safeguard provided the transition is straightforward, he pointed out that failed migrations have historically cost him more capital than external exploits.
Buterin shared these perspectives in reply to an earlier statement by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, who urged the sector to begin preparations for what he termed “bunker mode.”
Drake noted that the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) might face compromise ahead of “q-day,” the hypothetical milestone when quantum systems gain enough capacity to defeat standard public-key cryptography. In an extreme scenario, he suggested this type of cryptographic failure could transpire in a matter of months rather than years.
Drake advised transferring assets methodically to brand-new addresses that conceal their public keys, while simultaneously cautioning participants against panic or hurried actions.
Rising threat
Buterin emphasized that artificial intelligence-driven mathematics represents a primary driver behind why ECDSA might collapse sooner than anticipated. Most strategic frameworks, according to him, have operated on the assumption that “elliptic curves are broken, hashes remain safe, and lattices remain safe.”
The Ethereum creator pointed out a strong likelihood that the practical resilience of lattices “will suffer significant blows over the upcoming two-year period of AI-driven mathematical advancements.” He highlighted ML-DSA, fully homomorphic encryption, and lattice-based frameworks as the core vulnerability zones.
These cautions emerge concurrently with swift breakthroughs in AI-formulated mathematics. On Tuesday, OpenAI released numerous mathematical papers generated by an unreleased internal AI system—an occurrence Drake cited as proof that “mathematical superintelligence has arrived.”
Buterin expressed that the industry ought to adopt more cautious lattice parameters and prioritize hash-based architectures wherever feasible.
“Regarding privacy protocols, strongly prioritize avoiding the placement of encrypted notes on-chain. Instead, transmit them off-chain utilizing an external third-party system,” stated Buterin.
Notwithstanding these looming threats, Buterin reaffirmed that token holders must refrain from taking impulsive steps.
“[It remains] very simple to misplace funds through a botched, hurried transition, therefore … avoid rushing any actions,” he concluded.
