Ethereum layer-2 scaling network Starknet has initiated a preliminary, advisory vote to determine if STRK token holders want the platform to investigate transitioning into a standalone, post-quantum layer-1 blockchain.
This past Thursday, Starknet launched a seven-day ballot featuring three distinct choices: backing additional studies, rejecting the idea, or staying neutral until more data is available. The voting period concludes on October 22, with the final outcome to be shared shortly thereafter.
Approving the measure with a “Yes” merely indicates backing for more investigation rather than greenlighting an immediate migration. Additional governance votes and formal proposals would be necessary down the road, and no specific schedule has been provided for transforming into an L1.
StarkWare, the primary engineering firm supporting Starknet, explained that this initiative might enable the protocol to achieve quantum-safe defenses without relying on the upgrade timeline of Ethereum. At present, Starknet depends on Ethereum for core infrastructure components like its data availability and bridging mechanisms, which StarkWare points out still create quantum vulnerability ties.
StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson stated to Cointelegraph that safeguarding digital assets against quantum computing is an urgent priority demanding rapid action, contrasting this proactive stance with what he views as a more gradual pace of advancement within Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Both Ben-Sasson and the official Starknet account teased the initiative via separate social media posts on October 8, positioning the strategy as an effort to establish the ecosystem as the premier fully quantum-secure network by the year 2027.
Earlier in June, StarkWare released a phased, three-step quantum-defense strategy for Starknet, which addresses signature scheme enhancements, smart-contract transfers, and infrastructure reliant on Ethereum.
Meanwhile, Ethereum creators formed a specialized post-quantum task force back in March with the objective of deploying foundational protocol safeguards by 2029.
