Germany’s premier banking institution, Deutsche Bank, currently awaits official authorization to roll out digital asset custody services aimed at corporate and institutional clientele across Europe.
The financial institution shared in a statement on Wednesday that it intends to launch the service for initial customers during the current year, pending the conclusion of the relevant regulatory schedule.
Initially, the bank plans to support Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), alongside specific stablecoins like Circle USDC (USDC), EURC (EURC), and AllUnity EUR (EURAU). Plans are also in place to incorporate tokenized financial assets at a subsequent date.
Deutsche Bank is recognized among the entities cataloged by the Financial Stability Board as a Global Systemically Important Bank.
This milestone represents the German financial giant’s most recent step into the cryptocurrency sector, validating prior announcements that it was building out cryptocurrency custody capabilities. Back in June, Sabih Behzad, who leads digital assets at Deutsche Bank, disclosed that the bank was evaluating entry into the stablecoin ecosystem, which included the potential creation of its proprietary token.
Heinrich Frömsdorf, a spokesperson representing Deutsche Bank, informed Cointelegraph that the organization anticipates securing the custody permit in October under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations.
German banks ink partnerships to pursue crypto services
The drive toward adopting digital asset offerings is anticipated to pick up speed following the full implementation of MiCA on July 1.
Deutsche Bank initially disclosed intentions to deploy crypto custody services back in 2023 through a collaboration with Taurus, shortly after submitting its application for a digital asset custody license within Germany.
Alternative German banking institutions are likewise rolling out comparable services. In April 2024, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, which stands as Germany’s premier federal bank, began providing cryptocurrency custody options by joining forces with Austrian firm Bitpanda to power its institutional storage framework.
Furthermore, in December 2025, DZ Bank announced it obtained clearance from BaFin, the German regulatory authority, under the MiCA framework to run its meinKrypto platform.
