The Coinbase premium for bitcoin has dropped to a four-week low, pointing to softer demand from U.S. participants as market players deal with a setback regarding crypto legislation alongside the possibility of stricter monetary regulations.
This premium calculates the price gap between bitcoin valued in dollars on Coinbase and priced in USDT on Binance. The Coinbase Premium Index provided by CryptoQuant evaluates that variance as a percentage of overall value. Tuesday’s measurement near -0.07% amounts to approximately $50 based on a $75,900 bitcoin valuation—a narrow spread that nevertheless signals relatively modest purchase interest on the American platform.
This discount widened to about -0.07% on Tuesday from nearly -0.02% the day before, following the unsuccessful vote on the Clarity Act on Tuesday. That shift marks a complete turnaround from late August and early September, when the metric turned positive for the first time in months as bitcoin pushed toward $80,000. Since then, bitcoin has pulled back closer to $75,000.

Monetary policy creates an additional obstacle. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to release its determination later on Wednesday, with financial markets largely anticipating a 25-basis-point bump that would raise the federal funds target band to between 3.75% and 4%.
Enacting rate hikes during an energy supply disruption threatens to intensify economic pressure. While elevated borrowing costs can suppress demand and rising prices, they fail to fix interrupted petroleum shipments. Furthermore, it inflates debt financing expenses for corporations heavily investing in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Simultaneously, conflicts in the Middle East keep petroleum costs elevated, keeping Brent crude near $108 per barrel and WTI around $104. Costly energy risks keeping inflation persistent.
At the same time, the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield has pushed past 5%, causing financial conditions to tighten further. Combined, high yields, expensive oil, and regulatory ambiguity produce a challenging environment for bitcoin and alternative risk assets.
