This narrative centers on Bitcoin adoption at Shortwave Coffee and a vast global movement. We pose the question anyway, because the expression on a cashier’s face when an unfamiliar customer asks about digital currency over a five-dollar latte never loses its charm.
This year, the statistics swung to our benefit. In March 2026, Square initiated the automatic activation of bitcoin payments across roughly 4 million terminals, transforming the capability from an optional setting into standard enrollment. However, the gradual rollout has resembled a slow drip rather than a tidal wave. Inquire around, and you will encounter numerous Square POS units that have not yet received the update. Consequently, many of us chose to help speed up the distribution process independently: visiting neighborhood merchants, requesting the manager, and building the case for enabling bitcoin transactions. First up: Shortwave Coffee
When exploring the Saint Louis region, approximately 250 independent coffee houses exist, and one has secured fierce devotion from a handful of bitcoiners. Why?
Shortwave Coffee launched in Missouri during 2014 as a compact, family-owned roastery, and it has since expanded into five branches spanning three states: a pair in Columbia, one in St. Louis, alongside outposts in Minneapolis and a roasting facility in Tampa. They roast their own beans, pull an exceptionally fine espresso, and feature the detail that earned plebs’ loyalty: they take bitcoin at checkout.
Over the past few months, a collective of regional bitcoiners queried the baristas and dispatched messages to the company’s general inbox repeatedly before finally receiving approval in July 2026. The St. Louis establishment is situated within the Central West End at 33 N. Sarah Street. They provide a lovely outdoor terrace framed by a wildflower garden, a spacious indoor café accommodating over 75 patrons, and plentiful street parking. Travel two hours westward to discover Shortwave’s original Columbia venues, which also boast an inviting atmosphere. They share the same modern interior design, authentic local vibe, and bitcoin capability.
That essentially forms the premise of this entire column: we can select top-tier vendors for our spending. If they understand superior merchandise and value their clientele, they will accept bitcoin when patrons request it. Square serves as a wonderful platform, but bitcoin makes no distinctions.
