Summary
- Bitcoin declined 1.6% down to under $82,800, crossing a critical threshold that analysts warned could speed up a drop toward $80,000.
- XRP paced the downturn among leading cryptocurrencies while roughly $550 million in leveraged crypto positions faced liquidation, primarily impacting long traders.
- Crude oil and Treasury yields climbed on news of potential U.S. military actions against Iran alongside other supply disruptions, placing added downward pressure on digital assets and worldwide equities.
During Thursday morning trading in Asia, Bitcoin dropped 1.6% to just under $82,800. Petroleum prices spiked following news that the White House requested potential Iran strike targets from the Pentagon, driving Treasury yields back toward levels not seen since 2002.
Among major digital currencies, XRP experienced the steepest drop, falling nearly 4% to approximately $1.42. DOGE decreased 3% to stay just beneath 9 cents, and ether dropped 3% down to roughly $2,570. SOL and HYPE both declined by over 2%, whereas ZEC dipped under 1%. CoinDesk figures indicated that BNB and TRX remained the only gainers, each advancing less than 1%.
This decline pushes bitcoin past the $83,000 threshold, a recent low point which FxPro noted on Tuesday would signal that bearish market participants have taken charge. The institution indicated that crossing this barrier could push bitcoin down to $80,000 “quite rapidly.”
This event follows a prior day where CoinGlass metrics showed approximately $550 million in leveraged crypto investments were wiped out, predominantly affecting speculators anticipating higher valuations.
Brent crude advanced 2% to exceed $102 per barrel. In addition to the Iran developments, a severe storm disrupted U.S. petroleum production, and Houthi rebels backed by Iran targeted two Saudi Arabian airports, resulting in three fatalities. This surge in petroleum lifted the 10-year Treasury yield up by two basis points to 5.31%.
Equities retreated from record highs. Wall Street indices declined on Wednesday following an all-time closing high a day prior, while Asian equities mirrored the movement with a 1% decrease. The All Country World Index from MSCI dropped 0.2%, leaving it further away from the record peak it neared within 1.5% earlier in the week.
Bitcoin’s previous two consecutive negative sessions both coincided with rising oil costs and climbing yields. If Brent crude retreats under the $100 mark where it traded on Tuesday, that macro pressure would ease.
