Summary
- More than 6 million bitcoin, making up 31.2% of the circulating inventory, rest behind public keys already exposed on-chain, roughly 5 to 6 percentage points higher than the 2023 low.
- The vulnerable supply has expanded by 222,000 BTC since May, with trading platforms holding 1.79 million BTC behind visible public keys.
- These metrics track address utilization instead of immediate security threats. No actual exploit against bitcoin or ether wallet keys has been proven.
More than 6 million bitcoin BTC$82,800.62 reside behind public keys currently visible on-chain, emphasizing the extent of holdings that might be vulnerable if progress in artificial intelligence or quantum computing compromises Bitcoin’s security framework.
Those coins account for 31.2% of the total circulating supply, approximately 5 to 6% higher than the lowest point hit in 2023, according to figures from Glassnode.
Rafael Schultze-Kraft, co-founder of Glassnode, stated that the exposed supply has grown by 222,000 BTC ($18.2 billion) following the organization’s May release, whereas the overall bitcoin supply increased by only 64,000 BTC.
Trading platforms were responsible for 123,000 BTC of that growth and currently maintain 1.79 million BTC behind revealed public keys.
The percentages differ significantly. Coinbase exhibits an exposed proportion of 10%, whereas Binance registers 83%.
Apart from trading platforms, Fidelity manages roughly 375,000 BTC with merely 2% exposed. Grayscale’s ratio sits at 49%, Revolut at 99%, and Robinhood at 100%. Government holdings belonging to the U.S., U.K., and El Salvador display zero exposure under this measurement approach.

Public keys can become exposed via address recycling or show up directly inside specific bitcoin output formats, such as legacy pay-to-public-key outputs as well as Taproot. A sufficiently powerful quantum machine, or an unforeseen mathematical breakthrough, could potentially empower a malicious actor to calculate the matching private keys.
This update arrives amid cautions from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, who advised the sector to ready itself for “bunker mode.” Drake claimed that artificial intelligence might discover a shortcut to cracking wallet cryptography “within months, rather than years” during a worst-case scenario, ahead of the arrival of quantum computers.
