British financial institution HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies have evaluated a framework allowing autonomous artificial intelligence agents to access digital tools and execute micropayments through tokenized bank deposits, with settlements processed instantly on a blockchain test network.
Based on Friday’s disclosure, the trial integrated HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service alongside Ant Digital’s Anvita Flow framework, which permits AI agents to discover and utilize services, as well as the Jovay Testnet, a layer-2 blockchain testing platform.
HSBC supplied settlement functions and instantaneous risk evaluations, while Ant Digital’s network managed service access and payment coordination. The demonstration featured an AI agent choosing a digital service and finalizing a transaction. Both organizations characterized these transfers as micropayments, typically valued below $2.
The companies noted that the assessment remained restricted to technical verification and did not constitute a commercial release or public customer product.

Banks experiment with AI-agent payments
HSBC joins a group of financial institutions examining how autonomous AI entities might execute financial transactions on behalf of users.
During March, Spanish banking institution Santander completed an AI-agent-driven payment utilizing Mastercard’s Agent Pay framework in a controlled trial involving the lender’s active payment platforms.
Swiss digital asset institution Sygnum subsequently tested AI-agent-operated transactions on a main blockchain network in May, requiring users to authorize and sign every transfer. Spanish banking conglomerate CaixaBank also finalized an AI-agent-launched card transaction utilizing Visa Intelligent Commerce and traditional merchant payment setups.
Nevertheless, some industry participants doubt that established lenders can modify their legacy infrastructure for AI-oriented finance. During a May interview with Cointelegraph, Augustus Bank CEO Ferdinand Dabitz suggested that traditional clearing institutions depend on outdated architecture built for human operators rather than continuous automated transactions.
Augustus is currently developing a United States bank centered around stablecoins and automated AI operations, wagering that purpose-built technology can substitute parts of traditional financial networks.

AI agents could drive blockchain adoption
Investment research enterprise Citrini Research recently investigated blockchain’s potential function in AI-centered commerce. In an October 8 report titled Breaking The Wall, the organization asserted that autonomous AI agents might accelerate demand for programmable financial networks.
The company stated that conventional monetary systems, formulated primarily for human consumers, might need to adjust as AI entities increasingly manage transactions across various software applications. It asserted that distributed ledgers could supply the perpetual infrastructure necessary to transfer funds and financial assets programmatically.
“AI agents move programmatically, 24/7, across applications, and it’s only logical that money and financial assets eventually will, too,” Citrini wrote.
