The latest priorities from the SEC point to tokenization as a developing market hazard, whereas digital currencies are still missing as an independent examination category.
The United States Securities and Exchange Commission has incorporated tokenization into its examination priorities for fiscal year 2027, positioning tokenized securities alongside quantum computing and extended trading hours within the scope of emerging trends it intends to investigate.
Within its 2027 examination priorities, published on Friday, the SEC marked tokenization as a key focal point for reviews concerning vital market infrastructure. Tokenization was omitted from any explicit mention in the organization’s 2026 priorities.
The documentation addressed the dependability and safety of critical market infrastructure, noting:
Examinations under Regulation SCI will focus on emerging trends, including SI [super intelligence, the Trump administration’s term for artificial intelligence], tokenization of securities, extended trading hours, and quantum computing.
The SEC also categorized tokenization among the elevated-risk sectors it will review at clearing agencies, alongside operational risks, default management, and securities lending.
Meanwhile, cryptocurrencies continue to be absent as a standalone examination focus for the second straight year. The SEC previously included a dedicated section for crypto assets within its fiscal year 2025 priorities.
These updated priorities surface as mainstream financial entities push further into the realm of tokenized assets. Earlier this month, a collaborative venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange submitted filings to establish a marketplace delivering tokenized equities spanning over 60 enterprises listed in the United States.
