CMT Digital spearheaded the financing round, which encompasses fresh investments and share dispositions, as Luxor scales up its artificial intelligence infrastructure operations.
Luxor Technology, an enterprise specializing in bitcoin mining infrastructure, has disclosed a $16 million fundraising initiative geared towards building out its AI infrastructure division.
CMT Digital directed the investment round, featuring contributions from Canaan, MicroBT, Halo, Steelhead, alongside undisclosed angel investors. The transaction involved both primary and secondary equity.
“Primary capital consists of preferred shares, while secondary capital comprised a combination of preferred and common shares,” Ethan Vera, Luxor COO, explained to The Block. “We utilized the primary funds to accelerate corporate expansion, whereas the secondary portion brought new strategic partners into the syndicate. I am unable to disclose the exact distribution.”
Luxor initiated the fundraising process back in August and finalized that segment of the round in October, according to Vera. He refrained from disclosing the valuation or whether any participants secured board seats, observer slots, or advisory positions.
Luxor’s previous priced equity round occurred in 2021. Prior to this recent transaction, the firm had secured $6.575 million in primary funding distributed across three separate rounds, noted Vera. The company’s staff count has expanded from 11 employees during the 2021 round to 106 today, largely financed through internal operating cash flows, Vera added.
This fresh infusion arrives roughly five years later, following the September debut of Luxor AI, an initiative that adapts the hardware, software, power management, data analytics, and trading mechanisms originally designed for bitcoin miners to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
“We deliberately delayed raising capital until a distinct allocation purpose emerged, which is now materialized by our rapid push into the artificial intelligence sector,” Vera stated.
Expanding beyond bitcoin mining
Luxor’s cryptocurrency operations encompass a mining pool, node administration software, hardware brokerage, power infrastructure services, and hashrate derivatives. Its AI enterprise similarly spans hardware procurement, cloud computing, electrical grid services, and structured financial agreements.
“Computing markets are converging: identical miners, electricity substations, and financial capital previously dedicated to digital asset mining are presently driving AI workloads,” remarked Nick Hansen, co-founder and CEO of Luxor, via an official statement.
Luxor’s hardware brokerage desk has facilitated over $1 billion in transactions involving specialized bitcoin mining units, commonly referred to as ASICs. Furthermore, its energy division manages more than 75 megawatts of electrical load spanning the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) electrical grids, Vera stated.
Vera mentioned that a portion of the capital will bolster Luxor’s hardware division, which procures graphical processing units and AI-grade servers on behalf of clientele.
Additionally, Luxor intends to scale its cloud computing platform. The infrastructure offers sandboxed environments and execution runners tailored for AI agents, alongside automated code review tools, according to Vera. The company reported that this platform processed 1.8 million workloads during the current year as of September.
“Luxor Cloud remains heavily concentrated on supporting the rapidly expanding sector of AI-driven code generation,” Vera remarked.
Trading and financing AI compute
The capital injection will also support Luxor’s computational derivatives trading operations and market-making initiatives. The organization noted that its over-the-counter desk delivers options, forward contracts, and protective structures indexed to compute rental rates. These agreements settle in fiat currency.
“We are providing financial instruments that allow artificial intelligence enterprises to hedge, finance, and speculate on computational power,” Vera stated.
During August, Luxor additionally introduced an AI Hardware Price Index via its Hashrate Index analytics portal to monitor GPU node pricing trends.
When questioned regarding how Luxor plans to contend with AI startups securing substantially larger funding rounds, Vera emphasized that those emerging entities represent prospective buyers for the firm’s hardware, electricity, and derivative products.
“Luxor has constructed an enterprise serving in excess of 3,000 active clients today, built not upon massive venture rounds, but through rigorous dedication to our customer base,” he explained.
Luxor anticipates onboarding approximately 12 additional personnel across engineering, product development, sales, and marketing divisions prior to the conclusion of the year, Vera concluded.
