Affluent Bitcoin holders are increasingly utilizing their cryptocurrency as collateral for loans and as a source of revenue, signaling a transition from pure speculation to private banking practices, according to Xapo Bank CEO Seamus Rocca.
At the Gibraltar-regulated institution, clients are pursuing liquidity without liquidating their bitcoin, allocating portions of their reserves into yield-producing strategies, or expanding their BTC balance through interest earned on dollar reserves, he noted.
“Clients are searching for yield and alpha,” Rocca mentioned during a discussion with CoinDesk, highlighting the strong interest from investment funds and family offices for accumulation and revenue-focused offerings.
This pattern demonstrates bitcoin’s advancing maturity, he explained. Half a decade ago, the digital asset was treated primarily as a speculative trading instrument. Today, a greater number of investors seek comprehensive financial solutions tailored to their existing holdings.
Xapo evolved from a bitcoin custody enterprise celebrated for its subterranean Swiss vault storage. Its clientele features veteran early participants who have navigated numerous halving events—the scheduled decrease in fresh bitcoin supply—alongside the associated bull and bear markets.
The institution imposes an annual membership charge of $1,000, blending fiat dollar banking services with bitcoin safekeeping, investment opportunities, and credit facilities.
Two Camps of Bitcoin Wealth
Past market exposure has steered these members toward distinct paths.
Certain foundational adopters have grown more inclined to lock in gains now that bitcoin has achieved record valuations, having previously witnessed profits evaporate during earlier market slumps, Rocca noted. Conversely, other investors who entered the market around 2018 and 2019 remain firmly committed to hodling, choosing instead to borrow against their cryptocurrency whenever they require cash.
For those locking in profits, liquidating does not equate to abandoning the ecosystem. Certain individuals maintain their cash proceeds in dollar savings accounts while earning interest paid directly in BTC, steadily rebuilding their crypto holdings while preserving liquidity.
Rocca reported that nearly 45% of Xapo clientele utilize this specific capability.
Xapo currently promotes a variable base interest rate of 4.1% on dollar deposits, distributed in bitcoin, alongside a promotional 4.6% starting rate for qualifying new members. This operates alongside a separate bitcoin credit vehicle aiming for annual yields of up to 4% via lending operations, exposing participants to corresponding credit and counterparty risks.
The underlying driver across all these behaviors is the desire to activate existing capital.
“The central theme of this market cycle is yield, accumulation, and income generation,” Rocca stated.
Leveraging loans enables users to maintain upside exposure to future bitcoin appreciation, though they remain vulnerable to downside price corrections while shouldering debt liabilities.
Banks See Demand, But Move Slowly
Traditional financial institutions are increasingly recognizing that their customers desire exposure to bitcoin, Rocca observed. Their rising interest in custody solutions and investment instruments marks a profound departure from the skepticism he encountered when entering the crypto space in 2016.
Nevertheless, developing a comprehensive suite of products takes considerable time.
“Major banks operate slowly,” he remarked, characterizing legacy organizations where rolling out novel services demands extensive committee sign-offs and personnel hesitate to champion initiatives viewed as high-risk.
Ongoing regulatory and political ambiguities further compound this hesitation. Financial institutions that previously worried about regulatory repercussions from servicing crypto ventures require firm assurances that a favorable regulatory climate will persist prior to deploying capital, he explained.
Presently, certain traditional entities are doing just enough to satisfy client demand through investment vehicles, while avoiding services that would permit customers to borrow against or directly administer bitcoin assets.
“Their sluggish pace presents a prime opening for companies like Xapo Bank,” Rocca remarked.
He likewise identifies advantages in a cautious approach, maintaining that another collapse involving mismanaged digital asset firms could erode general trust in bitcoin as a whole.
The Next Wave of Institutional Buying
Rocca anticipates that the next phase of expansion for bitcoin will hinge upon broader institutional deployment of long-term capital.
He contends that a portion of current involvement via exchange-traded funds has centered on arbitrage mechanics, which contrast sharply with corporate treasurers choosing to allocate a dedicated slice of corporate balance sheets to bitcoin.
“Market observers called the institutional wave prematurely,” he stated.
Alleviated regulatory and geopolitical hurdles could help catalyze those capital commitments, potentially driving bitcoin toward $250,000 over the course of the next two to three years, according to his outlook.
Xapo clientele remain divided regarding the short-term trajectory. Some are purchasing assets under the assumption that the market has established a bottom, whereas others maintain their reserves in cash due to anticipations of further corrections, all while accumulating interest in bitcoin.
For Rocca, this diverse sentiment continues to signal robust accumulation and persistent demand for specialized banking tools that assist holders in expanding their positions across multiple years.
