Directly following the massive $6.3 billion breach of Binance—marking the largest cryptocurrency heist in history—various political figures and administration officials started voicing their perspectives as the November 3 US election drew near and early voting was already underway in numerous regions.
President Donald Trump faced questions regarding the Binance breach during a Friday press briefing. “We don’t know. We’re looking at that, the hack with Binance. They’re saying they’re going to get it back, they’re saying they’re guaranteeing it,” he stated.
In a statement shared on X late Friday, the cryptocurrency platform pledged to cover all losses. “We want to be clear about our commitment: Binance will absorb the financial impact of these stolen funds, not our users.” The exchange additionally noted that roughly $3 billion of the pilfered assets had already been locked down across different platforms.
Although it remained uncertain if any immediate political gains could be secured from the incident—which widespread reports connected to a North Korean hacking cell—both Republican and Democratic lawmakers established their stances almost instantly.
Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, a vocal and longtime supporter of digital assets, pointed to the stalled Clarity Act in a Friday social media post on X. “Yesterday, hackers stole more than $6 billion from Binance in less than 4 hours, the biggest heist in history. The Clarity Act would have given crypto firms legal cover to freeze suspicious transactions the instant law enforcement calls. Every minute lost is money gone for good,” she posted.

Clarity Act stalled over ethics provisions
On September 15, the Senate failed to secure enough votes for a cloture motion on the Clarity Act, legislation designed to implement the nation’s initial regulatory framework for digital assets.
The legislative measure had encountered roadblocks due to proposed ethics clauses that would prohibit government workers and their relatives from creating or profiting from digital assets while holding public office.
Subsequently, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission delivered a regulatory action proposal to the White House on September 18 targeting digital asset markets and transactions, as the agency pushed forward with its oversight strategy for the crypto sector.
Following the Binance breach on Friday, CFTC Chairman Michael Selig addressed crypto market rules during a television appearance, stating: “This proves our exact point in proposing regulations for crypto markets. … The real issue here is that these are unregulated offshore exchanges and they don’t have the same sorts of safeguards that we have in our financial markets here in the United States.”
Conversely, Democratic Representative Maxine Waters issued a Friday press release arguing that “The reported $6.3 billion hack of Binance should be a wake-up call to anyone who thinks the cryptocurrency industry can operate without strong accountability. Yet, Trump and Congressional Republicans have been set on pushing a deregulatory agenda that weakens compliance mandates and oversight of the crypto industry, not to mention the Trump family’s own questionable ties to the company.”

Trump family and Binance
She also addressed previous connections linking Binance to the Trump family, noting, “Remember that after Binance’s owner, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), gave over $2 billion to the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial, Trump’s Securities and Exchange Commission’s Chair Paul Atkins dropped the SEC’s slam-dunk fraud case against Binance and CZ, and Trump fully pardoned CZ, allowing him to again get involved with crypto.”
In the interim, Binance announced it was collaborating with law enforcement agencies, blockchain analytics firms, token creators, and alternative exchanges to track down and retrieve the compromised funds.
Furthermore, the organization committed to releasing an exhaustive post-mortem incident evaluation once a complete security audit is finished.
“We will provide a detailed technical report outlining what happened, the lessons learned and the additional safeguards being implemented,” Binance stated.
