Bitcoin (BTC) is in danger of converting $77,700 into a fresh resistance ceiling as late purchasers drift into an aggregate deficit, research cautions.
Key points:
- Bitcoin dropped under $77,700, which is the cost basis for buyers from a timeframe of one to three months ago, and this level might now transform into new resistance.
- Profitability metrics highlight a support band sitting at $68,400, matching a 12% net loss for those particular buyers.
- Bitcoin short-term investors are getting close to sliding into a net loss, with their cost basis established at $75,832.
Bitcoin’s $77,700 cost basis could become resistance
Information originating from onchain analytics network CryptoQuant indicates that BTC/USD is presently changing hands beneath the realized price, or cost basis, of market participants who acquired coins between one and three months past.
It classifies this group of investors as speculative traders who consequently display greater sensitivity to short-term price fluctuations. Their cost basis historically established upward-moving support throughout Bitcoin bull cycles.
“When BTC drops past this threshold, however, that exact cost basis can later function as resistance because underwater traders treat a rebound to breakeven as a chance to liquidate,” stated a CryptoQuant contributor in Monday’s analysis.
The cost basis, evaluated through CryptoQuant’s Trader Onchain Realized Price Bands indicator, currently rests at $77,700, while BTC/USD is valued around $76,500.
“What remains equally striking is that the Trader Realized Price has continued climbing steadily while BTC undergoes a correction. The separation between the market price and the cost basis has now shrunk substantially,” the contributor added.
BTC/USD dipped below the Trader Onchain Realized Price after maintaining positions above it since August 19. The Price Bands incorporate upper and lower trailing boundaries surrounding the cost basis fixed at predetermined profit and loss percentages. The closest lower band beneath the cost basis lands at a 12% total loss, currently equivalent to $68,400. Price previously dropped past it at the beginning of June, subsequently deviating downward by as much as 12.6% beneath the band over the succeeding month.

Bitcoin short-term holders watch profits erode
Underneath $77,000, Bitcoin is likewise nearing the realized price of the wider speculative investor community recognized as short-term holders (STHs), which acts as another trend line acting as support during upward movements, as well as resistance during downturn reversals.

These entities have retained their BTC possessions unliquidated for up to 155 days and maintain a cost basis of $75,832 as of Tuesday. This aligns with a reading of 1.012 on the cohort’s Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) Ratio indicator, which divides the aggregate market capitalization of STH coins by their realized capitalization, calculated from the rates at which they last shifted onchain.
The indicator demonstrates that once the price drops beneath the MVRV breakeven threshold linked to the STH realized price, the subsequent major psychological support marker is an MVRV value of 0.85. This is characterized as a zone of “tactical capitulation” or a “short trap.”
The beginning of June additionally marked the prior occasion when BTC/USD broke through the 0.85 MVRV threshold, before regaining it by mid-August.
