Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, co-creator and former chief executive of Binance, stated that artificial intelligence is accelerating cyber threats and asserted that firms must allocate resources toward AI-driven defenses, specialized security staff, and partnerships with AI security vendors.
During his initial media appearance since the October 29 breach of Binance, Zhao mentioned on the Talking Tokens podcast that the danger impacts the wider cryptocurrency sector and the international financial framework as well, due to digital assets intersecting with stablecoins, tokenized equities, real-world assets, and traditional banking.
“The pace of hacking is going to accelerate because artificial intelligence capabilities are so powerful right now. Simultaneously, we must employ more AI for our defense. The sole method to combat a monster is to practically transform into that monster.”
These remarks follow a series of security breaches across the blockchain ecosystem, which include an independent AI-leveraged compromise at blockchain analytics enterprise Chainalysis along with a $46 million security breach at the Brazilian trading platform Mercado Bitcoin.
Zhao noted that he became aware of the incident near midnight while in the United Arab Emirates, concentrating his efforts on community updates while the Binance crew labored to isolate the breach and safeguard clients. He credited the stable market reactions and subsequent capital inflows to the platform’s execution, robust financial reserves, and user confidence. He noted that security incidents remain fully avoidable given proper dedication and focus, while cautioning that businesses frequently slip into complacency.
Earlier on Tuesday, Binance reported that malicious actors employed a fraudulent job interview to compromise a staff member’s workstation before utilizing an internal artificial intelligence tool during the exploit. The exchange also shared that it successfully identified and halted 57 suspected North Korea-associated cyber threats throughout 2026.
CZ urges collective sector security cooperation
Zhao advocated for the creation of an industry coalition to exchange lessons, share operational standards, execute reciprocal audits, and assist in freezing compromised capital more rapidly. He regards protection as a continuous journey rather than a fixed objective that must be finalized ahead of mainstream adoption.
“As a sector, I urge […] establishing some form of security sector coalition to mutually learn from respective errors, distribute optimal practices, perform mutual audits, assist one another in locking assets very swiftly, and so forth.”
Zhao added that he had not held discussions with President Donald Trump or alternative American authorities concerning the event, though Binance and the broader cryptocurrency market would welcome governmental backing. Trump previously indicated that the United States was “investigating the matter.”
“Adverse events for crypto on this magnitude carry genuine macroeconomic consequences elsewhere,” Zhao explained. “Consequently, you cannot simply argue, ‘Observe, this represents an isolated issue for a single industry or a specific business.’ It affects the organization, affects the market, and affects global finance. Everything remains interconnected, and I maintain that, considering the scale of the fallout, this certainly reaches a national security threshold.”
Zhao voiced optimism that artificial intelligence could assist in uncovering software weaknesses and reinforcing defenses, whereas distributed ledger technology might empower swifter transactions driven by AI automation.
