According to an insider close to the situation speaking on Friday, Binance is collaborating with the FBI to assist in reclaiming a portion of the capital taken during the historic $6.3 billion security breach.
Cointelegraph reached out to the FBI for further information regarding the partnership but had not gotten a reply prior to publication.
The digital asset platform disclosed its partnership with investigative authorities via an X post on Friday, though it refrained from naming the specific departments taking part.
Binance announced that industry collaborators had successfully locked $3 billion of the pilfered assets, and it is currently cooperating with authorities to bring them back. The trading platform noted that it had set aside upwards of $6.34 billion from corporate reserves to absorb the deficit, with $5 billion of that amount sitting in the exact same cryptocurrencies that were taken.
Binance stands as the top digital currency marketplace by reserves, holding $134 billion in aggregate assets. Data from DefiLlama shows it handled roughly $6 billion in withdrawals over the preceding 24 hours.
Back in February 2022, the United States Department of Justice announced that police and investigative groups, such as the FBI, aided in recovering 94,000 Bitcoin (BTC) worth $3.6 billion at that period, which connected back to the 2016 Bitfinex platform exploit.
