Citi is growing its alliance with Coinbase to facilitate stablecoin transactions for enterprise customers. The companies initially revealed a partnership in October 2025 centered around fiat-to-crypto transaction systems.
Coinbase is set to leverage Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet to drive its Virtual Accounts, enabling users to receive, store, and disburse fiat currency while seamlessly turning incoming capital into stablecoins. In a separate effort, Citi’s institutional users will gain the ability to process stablecoin transactions via its Spring by Citi platform, with Coinbase managing the stablecoin transaction pathways and instantly converting digital tokens into fiat currency for final settlement.
These projects are rolling out initially in the United States and aim to supply enterprises with traditional banking capabilities while allowing stablecoin transactions without demanding that sellers personally hold or administer digital currencies.
“Our clients operate in an increasingly fast-paced and complex global economy, and we’re focused on delivering the solutions they need,” remarked Debopama Sen, leader of payments at Citi, in a press statement on Monday. “Our goal is to build the next generation of payments infrastructure – one that is seamless, interoperable, and operates across both traditional and digital payments instruments and networks. This is about enabling the future of commerce, today.”
Previously, the American digital currency platform and traditional banking behemoth noted they were investigating methods to advance diverse digital payment operations.
“It’s not a debate anymore – crypto and stablecoins are the tools that will update the global financial system,” stated Coinbase Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong during that period. “Excited to be collaborating with Citi to work on improving stablecoin utility and digital asset adoption with their clients.”
