Justin Drake cautioned on Wednesday that ECDSA could potentially fail prior to “q-day,” with a worst-case scenario happening in months instead of years.
Justin Drake’s alert advising the cryptocurrency community to prepare for prospective artificial intelligence-driven breakthroughs that might compromise prevalent cryptography has divided opinions, with certain individuals supporting precautionary steps while others caution that hasty actions could introduce dangers of their own.
On Wednesday, the Ethereum investigator stated that the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm might be compromised by progress in classical mathematics prior to “q-day,” the moment when quantum computers achieve sufficient power to crack widely deployed public-key cryptography. He noted that a worst-case breakthrough could materialize within months rather than years, and suggested methodically transferring assets to new addresses that conceal their public keys.
Addressing Drake’s assertions, Yehuda Lindell, Head of Cryptography at Coinbase, stated that there is “zero evidence whatsoever” that the decades-old hardness assumptions underlying elliptic-curve cryptography have become compromised.
“Making such statements without any evidence is the exact opposite of responsible conduct,” he wrote on X. “It represents the absolute definition of FUD.”
Haeeb Qureshi expressed an alternative perspective, describing Drake’s warning as “a very sober appeal.” The Dragonfly managing partner stated that the threat stemmed not from quantum computation, but from artificial intelligence-assisted mathematical breakthroughs challenging the fundamental assumptions of elliptic-curve cryptography.
In contrast, Solana Foundation vice president Jacob Creech remarked that Solana participants encounter a distinct scenario. Pointing out that the network utilizes Ed25519, he contended that a future protocol upgrade could enable participants to demonstrate ownership of their wallet seed using a hash-based proof, and subsequently transition to a quantum-resistant signature mechanism.
“Unlike numerous networks, Solana participants do not have to enter ‘bunker mode’ ahead of an expedited quantum schedule or classical assault facilitated by AI,” Creech wrote on X.
Buterin’s perspective
Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin additionally responded to Drake’s statements on Wednesday, arguing that the ecosystem must treat AI-accelerated mathematics seriously while simultaneously advising participants against hurrying into wallet transfers.
“It is very straightforward to misplace funds through a misconfigured hurried upgrade, so avoid rushing anything,” he stated, observing that flawed migrations have cost him greater losses than security breaches.
Drake’s caution followed OpenAI’s release on Tuesday of hundreds of mathematical texts generated by an internal model. Drake characterized the milestone as proof that “mathematical superintelligence has arrived.”
