European Union regulations concerning artificial intelligence are fully equipped to handle rogue entities, stated EU technology leader Henna Virkkunen.
International anxieties have mounted following recent events at OpenAI and Anthropic, prompting fears that runaway AI programs could break free from human supervision.
“We see that the safety and security of very capable models is a very hot topic internationally and we in Europe are well equipped for that,” Virkkunen remarked during a Friday interview with Reuters.
The EU Artificial Intelligence Act, which applies tiered oversight determined by risk severity, stands as one of the most rigorous AI frameworks globally and was approved two years ago.
Virkkunen pushed back against detractors asserting that the union’s artificial intelligence policies have become obsolete.

“We have our AI Act in place and the AI Act covers the whole life cycle of these models,” she stated, noting that authorities are currently supplying firms with instructions on assessing their systems while incorporating advice from 60 artificial intelligence specialists.
The European Commission reached out in late August to over 30 unnamed AI developers, requesting comprehensive data regarding their protective safeguards.
Virkkunen mentioned that she is currently reviewing the feedback received.
Cointelegraph reported Sept.13 that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei expressed in a blog post that the pace of artificial intelligence progression is excessive and, if unmanaged, might “outrun our ability to understand and control these systems.”
He explained that this rapid technological momentum was being fueled by artificial intelligence’s growing capacity to construct subsequent generations of systems, a process known as recursive self-improvement.
