The European Central Bank is inviting financial technology companies, payment processors, and additional entities to investigate how artificial intelligence agents might be utilized within digital euro transactions.
On Monday, the ECB launched the submission process for a fresh phase of its digital euro innovation initiative, splitting the scheme between practical trials of payment functionalities and collaborative seminars regarding prospective digital euro applications.
The testing track is scheduled to operate starting in January and concluding in June 2027, during which chosen contributors will build working models for electronic receipts, complex multi-party exchanges, conditional transactions, and novel user interface capabilities.
Seminars taking place during the initial six months of 2027 will address artificial intelligence-driven transactions, very small payments, direct machine-to-machine communications, and the integration of the digital euro within governmental functions.
A specific group of these participants will showcase their work at the central bank’s main office located in Frankfurt. The European Central Bank noted that these discoveries might help shape upcoming improvements and practical applications for the digital euro.
The digital euro is an envisioned central bank digital currency intended for everyday consumer payments throughout the Eurozone. It would function in digital form similarly to physical paper money and metallic coins.
Previously, the ECB chose 36 banking institutions and payment processing enterprises, such as Deutsche Bank, Stripe, and Revolut, to take part in a distinct twelve-month trial starting in the latter half of 2027. Any eventual rollout would still demand formal European Union legislation alongside a final ruling from the ECB.
