Founders Fund directed a $5 million acquisition of governance tokens for Anvil, a decentralized finance framework centered on digital-asset collateral, while the network rolls out fresh software designed to introduce its mechanics to traditional corporations and banking institutions.
As stated in a Monday press release, Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish, and Protoscale Capital also joined in the acquisition of ANVL tokens. Specific valuation details and deal terms were not shared publicly. Anvil informed CoinDesk that the tokens originated from its existing treasury rather than representing a brand-new issuance.
The governance asset associated with the protocol maintains a circulating supply amounting to 80 billion units out of a maximum total supply capped at 100 billion.
Operating on Ethereum, Anvil is engineered to enable digital currencies and tokens to serve as collateral backing financial obligations, such as credit and settlements. Anvil Research Labs, an enterprise-focused research and development organization building utility for the protocol, additionally introduced a software development kit (SDK) designed to let organizations integrate Anvil without requiring developers to write underlying blockchain code.
“Enterprises must have confidence that the promises backing payments and credit lines will be fulfilled,” noted Joey Krug, a partner at Founders Fund, within the announcement. “Anvil provides the means to anchor those obligations using verifiable digital asset collateral, and the new SDK simplifies embedding it into their offerings.”
Anvil Research Labs highlighted Consensys, Bitcoin.com, settlement provider Flexa, and several alternative firms as collaborators already utilizing or implementing its software tooling. Bullish (BLSH), the parent company of CoinDesk, is also collaborating with Anvil to investigate potential integration methods within its workflows.
The ANVL tokens acquired by Founders Fund along with the remaining participants grant voting powers over the protocol, allowing token holders to engage in governance decisions regarding its ongoing evolution.
A Different Application for Crypto Collateral
Anvil enters a decentralized finance sector where locking up crypto assets as collateral is already widely established. Decentralized lending networks presently manage around $56 billion in assets, according to data from DefiLlama, with platforms like Aave and Morpho standing out among the largest operators.
Brought to life by the Acronym Foundation, the protocol was initially bootstrapped and launched as completely open-source architecture. At present, it holds roughly $14 million in total value locked on its chain, keeping it relatively modest next to veteran decentralized finance lending networks.
Nevertheless, Anvil seeks to apply cryptocurrency collateral toward an alternative purpose. Typical decentralized finance lenders generally permit participants to deposit holdings as security to take out loans against them, accruing interest charges and facing liquidation risks if the market price of their collateral dips.
Anvil instead leverages collateral to secure financial promises without necessarily establishing any loan mechanism. Its primary offering functions as an on-chain equivalent to a letter of credit: assets are locked up to guarantee settlements to an opposing party and can be claimed should the agreement fail to be fulfilled, according to findings from a CoinDesk Research report. This setup avoids demanding that the collateral provider borrow funds or incur interest simply to establish the security guarantee.
