MediaMarktSaturn, the corporate owner belonging to the European consumer electronics seller MediaMarkt, has taken Ledger merchandise off its shelves and web marketplace following allegations of compromised hardware wallets.
“The MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group has pulled every item made by the manufacturer from both its physical branches and digital portals, and is currently communicating with the maker,” a representative informed Cointelegraph via email on Tuesday. “We treat this event with extreme gravity.”
On Monday, a user on X named Johannes asserted that he bought two Ledger devices from distinct MediaMarkt outlets. He mentioned that each device included unapproved wires and cellular hardware.
The safety worries surfaced on Friday after Ledger stated it is looking into complaints of asset theft tied to units distributed through the Southeast Asian vendor CryptoBilis. Ledger mentioned on Tuesday that these modifications broadcasted the recovery phrases of users via mobile networks, adding that it was examining incidents outside of CryptoBilis.
In a separate development, the former head of Mt. Gox, Mark Karpelès, noted on Tuesday that a Ledger Flex bought at the Changi Airport in Singapore featured a surveillance chip. Ledger replied by pointing customers toward its most recent update regarding the CryptoBilis probe, while omitting any direct commentary on the situation in Singapore.
Cointelegraph reached out to Ledger to inquire if it had verified any altered units within Europe, but obtained no reply before the article went live.
