Morgan Stanley has started leveraging the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation’s fresh tokenization platform to digitize real-world assets, becoming part of the initial cohort of financial firms to utilize the tool following its debut last week.
As stated in an X post, the financial institution announced it has successfully tokenized U.S. Treasurys and equities through the platform, positioning itself among the pioneer adopters.
“The hands-on experience of integrating tokenized securities with established market infrastructure will inform the continued development of the firm’s digital asset capabilities as the market evolves,” remarked Amy Oldenburg, head of digital asset strategy at Morgan Stanley.
The Depository Trust Company, the depository arm of DTCC guarding $114 trillion in assets under custody, onboarded 20 participants for the service upon its rollout, featuring institutions like Barclays, Bank of America, and BNP Paribas. Additional names such as Citi, JPMorgan, Fidelity Investments, State Street, and UBS were also included, with frameworks established to bring on subsequent users progressively.
DTCC noted during the launch that the framework was built with feedback from upwards of 150 companies, initially providing support for Canton along with its private Besu network.
This milestone arrives alongside Morgan Stanley’s updated timeline to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system by the first quarter of 2027, which is a shift from its earlier projection of the second half of 2026. Oldenburg shared with The Block previously that the company is actively constructing the required framework for the project.
Concurrently, Morgan Stanley is not unique in pursuing tokenization. Intercontinental Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange are likewise pushing forward with initiatives for a tokenized marketplace. Superstate, Broadridge, Computershare, and Equiniti have finalized deals to act as transfer agents.
