Engineers at payment-centric blockchain enterprise Ripple mention they are rapidly readying the XRP Ledger for a period where the encryption safeguarding accounts and transfers might no longer suffice.
“Our aim is not to delay until quantum computing turns into an active danger,” Ayo Akinyele, senior director of engineering at Ripple, conveyed to CoinDesk. “It is to guarantee vital financial architecture can adapt long prior to that juncture without destabilizing the frameworks, holdings, and participants relying on it.”
It is hypothesized that a sufficiently robust quantum computer could eventually crack certain mathematical safeguards utilized by distributed ledgers and banks today. Such a feat would permit a malicious actor, in specific scenarios, to deduce private keys managing holdings by working backwards from publicly accessible data.
Investigators frequently label the moment when such apparatuses become viable as “Q-Day.”
