Based on guidelines released by the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Thailand will permit exclusively bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) within cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds at the outset.
Set to go into force on October 16, the regulations mandate that these funds follow digital asset valuations and preserve an average net exposure of no less than 80% of their net asset value to the respective asset throughout every accounting term. Furthermore, the announcement noted that these funds must rely on custodians authorized by the SEC and execute trades strictly on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
The regulator stated that participants must formally recognize the hazards associated with crypto ETFs prior to executing trades, whereas brokerage companies will be prohibited from supplying margin credit to back acquisitions. Regarding fund administrators, the financial watchdog noted that delegation of their operations is restricted exclusively to authorized digital asset investment directors.
At the same time, eligible digital asset corporations are permitted to oversee crypto ETFs, provided they satisfy criteria concerning capital strength, personnel, and administrative infrastructure, the regulatory body explained.
The commission indicated that domestic mutual funds and private portfolios will gain authorization to acquire domestically registered crypto ETFs under these guidelines. Earlier, these entities were restricted to putting money into overseas crypto ETFs, though current investment ceilings remain in effect.
Nevertheless, the watchdog additionally banned the creation and sale of depositary receipts tied to international crypto ETFs during the opening stage. Brokerage institutions are restricted from facilitating overseas crypto ETF allocations for customers outside of institutional and ultra-high-net-worth brackets, according to the release.
