Bitcoin is changing hands near $79,300 on Monday, marking a 1.3% decline since midnight UTC following a weekend trapped within a narrow band beneath the $81,400 threshold.
Today’s downward slide occurs alongside an advance in U.S. stock index futures, with Nasdaq 100 futures climbing 0.3% since midnight to prolong the decoupling seen last week. Financial markets are closed today for the national Labor Day holiday.
Alternative cryptocurrencies drove most of the market momentum over the weekend and are currently giving back a portion of those advances. Bittensor (TAO), kaspa, internet computer (ICP), and celestia (TIA) each appreciated by upwards of 12% across the preceding 24 hours, though the majority of those gains materialized prior to midnight UTC. Since that time, TAO has ticked up 0.4%, chainlink has risen 1%, and NEAR Protocol has retreated by 1.5%.
Derivatives positioning
- Sentiment turns bearish: The taker buy-sell volume ratio within crypto derivatives leans toward short positions, with pessimistic orders representing 51.6% of activity. This signifies a reversal from Friday’s optimistic readings. The primary catalyst appears to be weekend geopolitical tensions flaring between the United States and Iran, alongside worries over potential Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, even though these anxieties seem exaggerated.
- BTC futures see capital exodus: Liquidity continues to flow out of bitcoin derivatives. Open interest (OI) has contracted to 670K BTC down from 709K on Friday, touching its lowest level since March 23 according to analytics provider Coinglass. Annualized perpetual funding rates are swiftly nearing zero, shedding their previous bullish inclination as observed via recent figures ranging from 8% to 10%.
- Ether, solana mirror the move: The ether and solana ecosystems are exhibiting a comparable behavioral pattern.
- XRP open interest cools: Open interest dedicated to XRP derivatives has similarly decreased, settling at 2.29 billion tokens—its lowest mark since August 7 and down significantly from a mid-month pinnacle of 2.78 billion. The signal is unmistakable; capital is withdrawing, leaving the price of XRP fluctuating sideways between $1.35 and $1.45.
- Smaller tokens buck the trend: Lower-cap digital assets are experiencing strong activity. Open interest for WLD grew by 11% concurrently with a 13% expansion in its spot valuation, a pairing typically interpreted as validation of an ongoing upward trend. WLD also boasts the highest 24-hour open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta (CVD) among smaller-cap coins, a positive indicator showing that purchasers have demonstrated greater aggression by executing market orders over passive limit orders.
- CVD splits across majors: Regarding cumulative volume delta among large-cap assets, LINK, TRX, CC, SUI, and ZEC reside on positive territory, whereas BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, NEAR, XMR, ADA, and others register on the negative side.
- Volatility signals calm: Thirty-day implied volatility metrics for both bitcoin and ether continue to signal market tranquility, lingering close to recent bottoms.
- Options flow diverges by asset: Within Deribit options markets, 24-hour volume tables highlight the $78,000 and $80,000 puts—both scheduled to expire on September 25—as the most favored plays, while the remaining positions in the top five consist of calls. Put contracts serve as protection against downward price movement for the underlying asset, which in this instance is bitcoin. Conversely, the situation for ether presents an absolute contrast, with call options commanding the highest rankings.
Token talk
- Bittensor (TAO) outperformed large-cap digital currencies over the past day with a 13% surge reaching $266 on $568 million in trading volume, although momentum has decelerated past midnight UTC by adding a mere 0.4%. Over a seven-day horizon, TAO is higher by 16.4%.
- The steepest loser of the day is Jupiter (JUP), which dropped 9% to rest at $0.2514 absent any apparent catalysts. The Solana-based decentralized exchange aggregator token has faced persistent downward pressure since breaking below its $0.33 support barrier last November.
- Kaspa climbed 12.75% across 24 hours and 24.8% on the week to reach 3.418 cents, though this occurred on a modest $17.6 million in volume relative to its $947 million market capitalization, making the price movement appear thin.
- The privacy sector rally is unwinding in a fragmented fashion. Dash dropped 5.3% to $67.56 since midnight, paring a weekly advance that still sits at 63%, while zcash (ZEC) eased 1.74% to $1,206 and monero (XMR) remained essentially flat.
- Arbitrum shed double-digit percentages over the 24-hour window down to 17.17 cents after nearly doubling during the week, marking the most substantial single-day decline amongst liquid mid-cap assets.
- Chainlink stood out as one of the few tokens maintaining buying interest, advancing 1% since midnight UTC to $13.37 alongside an 18.6% weekly gain.
