Individuals who missed out on the initial volatile price swings of bitcoin BTC$86,028.63 now have an alternative option to examine.
On October 2, the commission cleared a Cboe BZX regulatory modification permitting six exchange-traded funds managed by Volatility Shares, each designed to provide triple the daily performance of the underlying reference asset. Along with bitcoin and ether, the portfolio includes gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas.
This represents a significant milestone because American cryptocurrency funds had previously been limited to a maximum of 2x leverage.
These vehicles are not yet active for trading, given that the sponsor still requires the SEC to render its registration statement effective, and the regulatory filing specifies no timeline. Such instruments will maintain regulated futures contracts linked to bitcoin and ethereum rather than holding the underlying tokens directly.
Industry experts quickly pointed out the specific target audience for these investment products.
“Leveraged ETFs are for trading, not investing,” noted Eric Balchunas, Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg, via X.
These funds are required to rebalance daily to maintain their 3x leverage target. This operational mandate compels them upon market closes to purchase additional futures following market rallies and liquidate positions following declines, creating automated flows that frequently magnify intraday fluctuations. As the total assets under management expand, this footprint increases correspondingly. Furthermore, the standard daily reset implies that cumulative returns over multiple sessions can diverge significantly from the 3x benchmark, occasionally moving in the opposite direction.
Blockstream Chief Executive Officer Adam Back expressed it more directly: “Auto re-leveraging strategies bleed capital in a sideways chop, especially with a high volatility underlying… like bitcoin,” he stated.
Such value erosion is commonly identified as volatility decay. For instance, if bitcoin appreciates by 10% on one day and drops by 10% on the following day, the net performance is negative 1%. Conversely, a triple-leveraged vehicle would surge by 30% before dropping by 30%, resulting in a final loss of 9%. The frequency with which prices oscillate within a consolidation range devoid of a clear trend causes the leveraged instrument to lag behind and steadily deplete capital.
Volatility Shares itself explicitly acknowledges this vulnerability.
“The more volatile the benchmark, the greater the potential for volatility decay,” the firm stated within its preliminary prospectus submitted as part of Form S-1 paperwork.
The documentation is similarly explicit regarding the ideal profile for participants engaging with these instruments.
“An investment in 3x Bitcoin ETF is not suitable for all investors, may be deemed speculative, and should be considered only by persons who can bear the risk of total loss associated with an investment in 3x Bitcoin ETF,” the text noted.
Additionally, futures contracts introduce another expense category. As these agreements approach expiration, the fund must dispose of them and acquire longer-dated alternatives, which typically carry higher costs. This constant rolling mechanism introduces a permanent drag on long-term performance, mirroring criticisms leveled against standard bitcoin futures exchange-traded funds upon their debut in 2021.
Ultimately, this regulatory approval serves as another indicator that digital assets are gaining access to the same financial instruments found in traditional markets. While short-term speculators may find this a potent instrument, traditional spot exchange-traded funds remain the preferred alternative for long-term and risk-averse investors. Stay vigilant!

What’s trending
- Bitcoin is about to get a major bullish signal it hasn’t had in over a year (CoinDesk): Bitcoin is currently down, yet its overarching momentum suggests a different narrative. The 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day simple moving averages are positioning themselves for a technical crossover that would yield a complete bullish alignment absent since 2025.
- Euro at 17-month low, dollar near pre-Liberation Day highs (Reuters): The single currency retreated to $1.1161 during Asian trading hours, marking its weakest level since May 2025, and last traded 0.62% lower at $1.1118. Meanwhile, the US dollar index gained 0.39% to reach 102.33 after touching 102.53, representing its peak valuation since April 10, 2025.
- Treasury yields inch lower as investors pare back Fed rate hike bets (CNBC): American government bond yields declined slightly on Monday following a severe market retreat during the prior week, as market participants awaited the publication of the latest Federal Reserve meeting minutes.
- Ethereum investors are stuck in a two-week staking exit line. Here’s why. (CoinDesk): The queue of ether awaiting withdrawal from Ethereum’s proof-of-stake architecture expanded by more than five times over a three-day span last week, elevating the departure queue to its maximum duration observed in 2026. The vast majority of these redemption requests originated from MetaMask users following a disclosed security breach on September 30.
Today’s signal

The visual data illustrates daily variations within Volmex’s annualized 30-day bitcoin implied volatility metric, BVIV, frequently referenced as the bitcoin VIX.
This index gauges anticipated price fluctuations within the cryptocurrency.
The barometer has remained relatively stable between 35% and 40% subsequent to mid-September, implying that market operators anticipate orderly conditions despite rallies observed in the Dollar Index and Treasury yields.
Consistently low volatility typically characterizes upward price trends. Simultaneously, extended periods of market tranquility frequently foreshadow significant upcoming volatility.
