Bitcoin options are capturing a larger portion of the primary cryptocurrency’s derivatives ecosystem, pointing toward increased maturity in trading strategies.
Data from Volmex, the creator of the BVIV bitcoin volatility index, reveals that options represented slightly under 60% of open interest across all bitcoin derivatives in the prior week. This metric represents an increase from roughly 50% at the beginning of the year.
Open interest tracks the aggregate worth of active contracts that market participants have initiated but not yet settled. This broader marketplace includes bitcoin futures, perpetual swaps, and both native crypto options as well as ETF-based options.
Volmex characterized this expansion as a fundamental structural evolution within bitcoin markets, indicating that trading activities are increasingly focused on risk mitigation rather than mere directional gambling.
Through options, investors can safeguard their asset portfolios, generate supplementary yield, or speculate on major price movements without relying on borrowed funds, allowing positions to persist longer than leveraged perpetual contracts. Furthermore, these instruments are priced based on anticipated volatility, which is precisely what metrics like the Volmex BVIV measure.
Options function as derivative instruments featuring a strict expiration date that enable traders to evaluate three variables simultaneously. Participants can wager on price trajectory, the magnitude of expected price swings, and timing factors regarding when a specific shift will or will not occur.
As of Friday, the composition of the bitcoin derivatives landscape was structured as follows: Options linked to American spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds registered approximately $36 billion in open interest, with BlackRock’s IBIT product contributing nearly $35 billion to that aggregate. Incorporating options from decentralized and centralized crypto platforms brings the total to roughly $76 billion. Factoring in bitcoin futures contracts, which comprise perpetuals and dated agreements, the overall market expands to approximately $129 billion.
ETF-centered options currently comprise roughly 47% of the total bitcoin options sector, a domain largely dominated by Deribit. Open interest for IBIT options has tripled since January 2025, when it stood at approximately $11 billion.
This surge in options adoption mirrors historical trends observed in traditional U.S. equities, where derivatives tied to the S&P 500 Index constituted nearly 75% of all index-equivalent derivative volume by the previous year.
The expanding implementation of options is also evident within BlackRock’s growing selection of bitcoin investment vehicles. In June, the world’s premier asset manager launched the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA), which generates monthly distributions by writing call options against a portion of its IBIT holdings, trading away some potential upside potential in exchange for premium income. Additionally, the firm filed applications for a bitcoin buffer ETF designed to utilize options to cushion losses during market corrections while capping potential gains.
Collectively, these developments indicate that bitcoin’s price volatility may continue its downward trajectory, maintaining a pattern that has persisted since spot bitcoin ETFs launched in early 2024. Stay alert!

Today’s signal
The accompanying chart illustrates bitcoin’s daily price action utilizing a candlestick format. Superimposed on the graphic is the Ichimoku cloud indicator—frequently deployed to ascertain dynamic support, resistance, and market momentum—alongside the 50-day simple moving average.
Bitcoin appears to have successfully rebounded off the support boundary established by the Ichimoku cloud. For technical analysts, maintaining price action above both the cloud structure and the 50-day moving average would confirm that the broader bullish momentum remains intact.
Immediate overhead resistance is situated near $87,500, corresponding to the recent swing high, followed by the $90,000 psychological threshold where significant options open interest is concentrated on Deribit.
