Bitcoin climbed past the ceiling of its September trading range on Monday, changing hands at $84,984 during late European morning hours. This marked a 5.4% increase over a 24-hour window, pushing the asset well above its September 4 peak of $82,284.
Rather than stemming from fresh market conviction, the upward push was fueled largely by mandatory liquidations. Out of $746 million in total positions wiped out over the past day, $647.9 million consisted of bearish bets. An additional $159.9 million was liquidated within the final hour before reporting, with 95% of those coming from short positions. Coinglass metrics indicate that Bitcoin shorts accounted for $277.5 million of the daily liquidation tally, while ether shorts represented $122.8 million.
Market-wide open interest climbed by 7.59% to reach $156 billion despite the mass elimination of short bets, while 24-hour trading volume expanded by 39% to hit $224 billion. This combination indicates that participants are establishing new positions to replace the ones that were wiped out, rather than withdrawing from the market entirely.
Ninety-five out of the 100 assets comprising the CoinDesk 100 index experienced gains for the day, lifting the index by 3.0%. However, market leadership shifted away from Friday’s pattern, when smaller-cap assets and decentralized finance tokens drove the momentum. Meanwhile, macroeconomic indicators remained relatively stable rather than reversing direction; Brent crude held flat at $101.97 after previously touching $108 mid-month, gold dipped 0.65% to $4,350, and silver declined 0.32% to $66.24.
Derivatives positioning
- Bullish flow: For the first time in several weeks, the futures market taker long-to-short volume ratio shifted to roughly 53% in favor of buyers. This demonstrates that incoming capital is primarily driven by buyers, aligning cleanly with the current upward price trajectory.
- Bitcoin’s OI increases: Total open interest in Bitcoin futures surpassed 700,000 BTC for the initial time in weeks. While this metric remains well below historical peaks, the growth highlights heightened appetite for leverage as spot prices accelerate.
- Bullish whale positioning: Binance metrics present a mixed picture. The long-short ratio for whale accounts hovered close to 1.0, signifying that large traders are executing market orders at an equal buy-and-sell rate without dictating short-term intraday price direction. Conversely, the overarching whale derivatives position ratio remained above 2.0, pointing to massive, leveraged long exposure maintained by major accounts anticipating substantial future gains.
- Record OI in CRO: Although open interest is expanding across various digital assets, CRO is completely outpacing the rest of the field. Futures open interest linked to CRO reached an all-time high of 536 million tokens, supporting the cryptocurrency’s sharp price appreciation. Nevertheless, derivatives data also highlights underlying risks, as annualized perpetual funding rates surged near 60%, showing that long positions are severely overcrowded. When funding expenses reach such extreme levels, the market naturally positions itself for heightened instability and the potential risk of a long squeeze.
- Positive CVDs: Analyzing 24-hour cumulative volume delta metrics, Bitcoin and ether recorded the highest figures among the top 20 cryptocurrencies. These positive readings verify that buying pressure is aggressive and executed via market orders instead of passive limit orders.
- Vol indices rise slightly: The 30-day implied volatility benchmarks for Bitcoin and ether, known as BVIV and EVIV, registered minor increases without displaying any abnormal behavior. This indicates that market participants anticipate a controlled upward movement.
- Calls in demand: Within the options venue hosted on Deribit, traders continue aggressively seeking upside exposure through bullish call options for both Bitcoin and ether, according to 24-hour volume rankings. Early in the day, a sizable ether call spread was executed via Paradigm.
Token talk
- Sui stood out among major altcoins, advancing 12.3% since midnight to reach $1.0073 and marking a 21.4% gain across 24 hours. Futures open interest for the token expanded by 28.9% to hit $402 million, signaling that the price movement is actively supported rather than fading.
- Artificial intelligence assets displaced layer-2 networks at the forefront of the advance. Decentralized compute token Artificial Superintelligence Alliance added 8.9% to reach $0.1911, Bittensor gained 7.0% to touch $280.13, and AI inference token Venice climbed 16% earlier in the trading session.
- Aave, a lending protocol token, increased by 7.0% to $147.26, while restaking token ether.fi rose 6.4% to $0.7691. These moves serve as a reminder that the decentralized finance backing seen on Friday has moderated rather than vanished, even though the broader sector index traded lower on the day.
- Near Protocol eased slightly after driving weekend gains, posting a 2.9% rise since midnight to $4.29 alongside a 20% gain over 24 hours. Its open interest climbed 26.8% from the previous day to $882 million, indicating that market positioning remained intact despite the price cooldown.
- Dogecoin climbed 10.2% over 24 hours to reach $0.0939 with a 15% increase in open interest, while Avalanche advanced 14.1% to $11.22 backed by a 19.5% expansion in open interest. Both tokens successfully regained ground after lagging behind during the middle of the prior week.
