Cardano has been integrated into the official x402 software kit, providing programmers with the tools necessary to enable applications and AI agents to settle online transactions using ADA or assets native to the network.
The x402 framework transforms the traditionally ignored “402 Payment Required” HTTP status into a checkout process embedded straight into web requests. A provider responds with its pricing and instructions, allowing the agent to sign a transaction and obtain the requested data or computing resources after validation.
Consequently, an autonomous agent compiling a research document can purchase a singular dataset on demand, bypassing the need for human intervention to register accounts, submit credit card details, or commit to monthly recurring charges.
Coinbase originally developed x402 in 2025 before transferring it to a Linux Foundation-backed organization counting Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and Amazon Web Services among its participants. Networks like Solana, the XRP Ledger, and select Ethereum-compatible chains already incorporate the standard.
Developers at the Cardano Foundation started with a proposal ratified in June, subsequently constructing the client and server applications required to request transactions alongside a validation and submission mechanism known as a facilitator. The initial launch delivers TypeScript compatibility, with Python support scheduled for development next.
