A sell-off across Bitcoin (BTC) and various altcoins sparked more than $1 billion in liquidations during a 24-hour window, as short-term market participants transferred tens of thousands of BTC to trading platforms at a loss.
Key points:
- Cryptocurrency liquidations reached nearly $1.1 billion over the span of 24 hours following a Bitcoin price decline to $80,350.
- The downward price pressure on BTC heightened the probability of a break below crucial support levels, according to analysis shared by Rekt Capital.
- Short-term Bitcoin holders transferred over 55,000 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday.
Bitcoin drop to $80,350 fuels $1.1 billion liquidations
Figures provided by CoinGlass calculated overall crypto liquidations at $1.09 billion across the 24 hours leading up to 10 am UTC on Friday.
This represented the largest single-day amount recorded since August 21, when the BTC/USD rate climbed from $73,000 to $79,500, marking two-month peaks and generating $1.3 billion in liquidated short crypto positions. Conversely, long positions made up $1.05 billion of Thursday’s aggregate total.

The market correction arrived subsequent to updates regarding the United States government transferring in excess of 12,000 BTC previously seized by authorities. Such asset movements can often spark concerns regarding potential liquidations.
The BTC/USD trading pair retreated to $80,350 on Bitstamp, marking its lowest point since September 18, prior to rebounding toward roughly $82,500 on Friday. That specific threshold remained vital throughout Bitcoin’s wider upward trajectory originating in early July, serving as the breakout marker for an inverse head-and-shoulders chart structure. Bitcoin needs to maintain this threshold as a support zone to validate the bullish reversal.
Market trader and analyst Rekt Capital, who has been monitoring this reversal formation along with its parallels to Bitcoin’s 2023 recovery phase, now regards the upcoming weekly candle closure as pivotal.
“Bitcoin is currently failing its retest of ~$82500. Weekly Close below $82500 and turn it into resistance however and Bitcoin will be back in its Macro Accumulation Range,” he stated on Thursday via X.

Short-term holders send 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss
Onchain metrics also illustrated mounting pressure among newer participants in the Bitcoin market as valuations declined.

Data analytics platform CryptoQuant analyst Amr Taha noted that short-term investors—defined as entities retaining Bitcoin for a maximum of six months without transacting—deposited 55,600 BTC onto exchange platforms at a loss on Thursday.
Transfers executed at a loss denote coins being sent to exchange wallets at valuations beneath the rates recorded during their preceding network movement. These actions frequently demonstrate an impulsive tendency among investors to liquidate their holdings at a deficit due to apprehensions of steeper declines if they delay selling.
CryptoQuant pointed out that the aggregate loss figure recorded on Thursday exceeded the metrics seen on June 26, a timeframe when Bitcoin dipped under $60,000 across two successive days.
“Notably, Bitcoin was trading above $81,000, compared with $59,300 in June — a price difference exceeding 36%,” the analyst observed, adding that platform depositors might not have immediately chosen to sell their complete holdings, even following their transfer to user accounts.

“Historically, aggressive loss-driven selling by short-term participants can coincide with short-term capitulation, potentially exhausting weaker holders and creating conditions for a subsequent price recovery,” the analysis concluded.
