Coinbase, the leading American cryptocurrency exchange, is pushing to offer round-the-clock equity products as perpetual contracts gain traction.
The firm submitted a registration notice to the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this week seeking authorization to roll out equity perps, according to a Thursday post on X by Coinbase Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad.
“Equity perps have proven demand internationally, and we’re excited at the prospect of a regulated pathway for U.S. investors,” he stated.
Shirzad added that Coinbase will subsequently require approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as well. Coinbase introduced perpetual futures back in March, enabling international users to trade those instruments on a curated selection of equities including Amazon, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Apple Inc.
Perpetuals, or perps, represent a category of futures contracts lacking an expiration date, allowing traders to speculate on asset price movements without holding the underlying property. A significant portion of this market currently functions on overseas exchanges lacking U.S. regulation.
Back in May, the CFTC permitted bitcoin perpetual futures contracts to list domestically when agency staff approved Coinbase and KalshiEX to offer the assets. A month later, the CFTC published a request for comment concerning 24/7 trading and crude oil perpetual contracts.
Particular attention has fallen on Hyperliquid (HYPE). That network gained traction among crypto derivatives participants and drew focus last month at the White House when President Donald Trump mentioned that CFTC Chairman Michael Selig was striving to integrate the perpetual trading platform Hyperliquid into the United States in a legally compliant and lawful manner.
Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Hyperliquid Labs is pursuing a domestic U.S. expansion through an agreement with Payward, the parent organization of crypto exchange Kraken.
