The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is asking its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) for permission to launch a modernized naming framework on the Ethereum mainnet.
Nick Johnson, the founder of ENS, put forward an executable proposal draft to roll out ENSv2, which represents the next iteration of the protocol. Should it pass, this enhancement will halt fresh domain registrations on the legacy ENS registrar, though current domain owners will still be permitted to renew their handles.
This update brings a revamped registry design that offers enhanced flexibility regarding domain administration and access rights. Following the launch, ENS Labs intends to hand over its remaining management authority over the updated smart contracts directly to the DAO.
Fresh .eth sign-ups will transition to the new infrastructure once the domain databases have fully synced. Johnson cautioned that registering new names will be paused on both iterations for a brief window lasting a few hours throughout the migration process.
Current domain owners are under no obligation to migrate, and the proposal notes that their addresses will keep operating as expected. Furthermore, ENS Labs has reserved existing .eth names for their rightful owners on the new platform, granting users the freedom to transition whenever they choose.
This activation proposal is currently in the draft phase and must progress to a formal onchain DAO ballot prior to deployment.
Based on ENS governance guidelines, executable motions demand a minimum voter turnout of 1%, which equates to 1 million ENS votes, alongside a majority vote over a seven-day voting window. If successful, the deployment will undergo a mandatory two-day timelock before taking effect. A specific vote schedule has not yet been disclosed.
