Russia’s premier financial institution, Sberbank, has obtained clearance to operate as a crypto exchange as it gets ready to facilitate trading for Bitcoin, Ether, and Tether USDt.
Sberbank, the nation’s top banking establishment, has received authorization from the central bank to engage in digital asset trading, specifically ahead of a scheduled rollout in December.
The updated directory published by the Bank of Russia on Tuesday lists 10 permitted cryptocurrency exchange platforms and six digital custodians, expanding from totals of four and five respectively just a week prior. These rosters feature prominent financial institutions like Sberbank and VTB alongside non-banking entities such as T-Invest Lab and Atomyze.
Sberbank previously announced its intention to roll out crypto offerings accommodating Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Tether’s USDt (USDT) on December 1, 2026, utilizing its established SberBank Online, SberInvestments, and SberBusiness interfaces.
Sberbank has already commenced trials for acquiring, liquidating, depositing, and withdrawing digital assets via its SberBank Online mobile application, as noted by Russian financial publication Vedomosti reported on Thursday, attributing the details to the institution’s media division. The enterprise stated that the ultimate deployment schedule hinges on supplemental regulatory directives from the central bank.
These official registrations succeed the September 1 enactment of Russia’s updated cryptographic regulations, which subjected exchange providers and custodial services to the direct supervision of the central bank. The nation continues to ban the utilization of digital currencies for purchasing merchandise and services.
Sberbank stood out among the initial enterprises to attain digital custodian accreditation last Tuesday.
