The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has strongly advised European Union digital asset businesses to halt offering services connected to stablecoins that fail to meet the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) standards, establishing a strict three-month period to wind down current holdings.
During Thursday’s announcement, ESMA stated that domestic watchdogs ought to demand that companies liquidate leftover exposure to unauthorized stablecoins immediately, and at the absolute latest by January 8, 2027.
“Crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) authorised under MiCA should cease providing services related to non-MiCA-compliant stablecoins to clients in the European Union,” ESMA wrote.
This advisory applies to all MiCA-supervised crypto operations, which encompasses trading venues, exchange mechanisms, trade execution, safekeeping, transactions, financial consulting, and asset management.
ESMA noted that virtual asset enterprises need to put operational, legal, and systemic safeguards in place to stop EU customers from purchasing or growing their holdings in non-approved stablecoins.
Authorities could authorize restricted operations to assist users in closing out current holdings, which includes selling off assets, swapping tokens, cashing out, moving funds, and holding them securely. Nevertheless, ESMA emphasized that these specific functions must remain short-term and heavily monitored.
This latest directive builds upon ESMA’s previous directive from January 2025, which urged limits on trading and swapping operations featuring unauthorized stablecoins.
