Virtual asset companies need to submit their applications by Feb. 28, 2027, and current anti-money laundering registrations will not automatically transition into an FCA license.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) of the United Kingdom launched the application process on Wednesday for digital asset enterprises looking to secure authorization under a new oversight framework scheduled to launch on Oct. 25, 2027.
Businesses wishing to maintain operations within the UK must submit their paperwork by the conclusion of February 2027. The regulatory body anticipates ruling on submissions received throughout this timeframe prior to the framework’s official launch.
This structure broadens the agency’s supervisory reach past anti-money laundering and financial promotion mandates. The authority completed its regulations in June, incorporating stipulations regarding stablecoin creation, digital asset exchanges, and market manipulation.
“The UK’s upcoming digital asset framework will offer users enhanced safeguards and provide companies with a transparent structure for their operations,” stated Dominic Cashman, head of authorization at the FCA.
Emma Banymandhub, chief executive officer of the payments sector trade organization The Payments Association, praised the launch of the portal but advised companies already registered under money laundering regulations (MLRs) to view this as an entirely new licensing procedure.
“MLR registration will not transfer over, and companies must be pragmatic regarding the benchmarks they must achieve,” she noted in statements provided to Cointelegraph.
Banymandhub emphasized that execution will prove especially critical for boutique and expanding enterprises.
