UK financial services institution Hargreaves Lansdown is enabling everyday investors to purchase bitcoin, roughly twelve months after declaring that the cryptocurrency was not an asset class.
The investment enterprise, headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom, indicated on its portal that it is making bitcoin and alternative cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes accessible to investors. ETNs function as investment funds that operate on stock exchanges and monitor the valuation of digital assets.
This shift follows last year’s warnings issued to clients by the company, which oversees nearly £173 billion, equivalent to over $233 billion, in client assets, advising them against purchasing bitcoin.
Previously, the institution stated that although Bitcoin’s long-term gains have been favorable, it has undergone multiple phases of drastic decline and represents an extremely fluctuating investment, making it substantially riskier than equities or fixed-income securities.
At that time, the official Hargreaves Lansdown investment perspective maintained that Bitcoin failed to qualify as an asset class, arguing that cryptocurrencies lack the properties required for inclusion in growth or income portfolios and should not be depended upon by clients for achieving their financial objectives.
At present, a selection of ETNs mirroring the value of bitcoin and additional digital currencies can be accessed. The company cautions participants that cryptocurrency ETNs are categorized as high-risk investments and can experience high fluctuation.
During 2024, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission authorized bitcoin exchange-traded funds for the public following ten years of rejecting such offerings.
Those funds achieved the most triumphant launch within ETF history as market participants who previously lacked access to the asset class hurried to acquire the instruments.
Managed by prominent financial institutions and asset managers including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley, these investment structures currently oversee upwards of $100 billion in total assets.
