The team behind the digital collectible and toy brand Pudgy Penguins is terminating its Abstract blockchain after suffering tens of millions of dollars in funding losses, marking the second Ethereum-based network to announce a shutdown within a single week.
Abstract is scheduled to cease operations on December 15. The developers have instructed participants to transfer their holdings beforehand, cautioning that any capital left on the platform will become permanently unreachable.
Abstract functions as a layer-2 network, which is a secondary architecture designed to process transactions affordably before submitting aggregated data to Ethereum for settlement. It debuted in January 2025 with the expectation that the existing Pudgy Penguins community could successfully onboard casual users into Web3 applications.
Pudgy Penguins originated as an array of illustrated penguin non-fungible tokens, representing digital items whose ownership is verified via distributed ledgers. It stands as one of the most prominent NFT portfolios, expanding into an international brand that encompasses games, toys, and merchandise distributed through major vendors such as Target and Walmart.
Luca Netz, the CEO of parent entity Igloo, noted that the firm had financed Abstract for approximately a year and a half. The organization ultimately chose to halt support rather than jeopardize the core Pudgy Penguins enterprise or issue a new token to acquire additional capital.
Management pointed to stagnation in expansion, shallow trading books, minimal institutional participation, and an underdeveloped decentralized finance ecosystem as primary drivers for the closure.
Netz stated on X that despite sustaining eight-figure losses, they consciously avoided launching a token or undertaking an initial coin offering.
Netz further explained that Igloo will redirect its total attention toward Pudgy Penguins, its digital assets, and the brand token PENGU, noting they could no longer justify siphoning resources from the main brand.
The cost of keeping a blockchain running
Abstract reported handling upward of 325 million transactions, facilitating $6 billion in decentralized exchange volume, and connecting 4 million active wallets. It also claimed that ecosystems across the network generated more than $40 million in economic output, drawing participation from major entities including Red Bull Racing and Disney.
Revenue generated by an application does not automatically subsidize the underlying blockchain infrastructure. While a game may monetize in-app purchases and an exchange may collect trade fees, Abstract merely captures the lower transaction processing fee.
Data from DefiLlama indicated roughly $3,900 collected in network fees during the trailing 24 hours, compared to nearly $39,000 earned by applications operating on top of Abstract. These chain fees must still cover operational overhead prior to yielding net income.
Upon rollout, Netz intentionally steered creators away from financial protocols toward lighthearted, entertaining utilities, although the ecosystem struggled to capture substantial liquidity despite its initial hype.
Netz remarked during the initial launch, as reported by CoinDesk, that builders seeking to construct DeFi tools should utilize platforms like Arbitrum or Berachain rather than Abstract, which aimed to remain strictly centered around entertainment. Abstract currently highlights this restricted market fit among its core operational hurdles.
This development unfolds just days after layer-2 network Blast revealed its own termination on October 2, citing expenses that outstripped income. Blast previously secured over $2 billion in total value locked and attracted backing from elite investment firms like Paradigm.
Based on DefiLlama bridged value metrics, Abstract still held roughly $76 million in capital as of Wednesday. Participants have until December 15 to withdraw their funds utilizing the network bridge and migration tools.
