Financial information and credit rating giant S&P Global has entered into an agreement to buy smart contract security business OpenZeppelin, as both parties revealed on Thursday.
Via an official press release, S&P Global noted that the acquisition will broaden its risk evaluation offerings into the onchain technology-risk tier, while enabling OpenZeppelin to leverage its presence within conventional financial sectors.
“OpenZeppelin’s standards, technology, and expertise already power the infrastructure behind the world’s leading stablecoins, tokenized funds, DeFi protocols, and onchain markets,” stated OpenZeppelin CEO Demian Brener within the announcement. “With S&P Global, that foundation reaches a broader set of organizations entering this market, as well as the blockchain networks and DeFi protocols gaining institutional adoption.”
Established in 2015, OpenZeppelin merges blockchain security audits and secure building solutions. The enterprise stated that its open-source smart contract codebases support greater than $37 trillion in transferred worth, which incorporates the vast majority of top-tier stablecoins and tokenized vehicles. The organization asserts it has performed upwards of 900 security reviews for crypto protocols and enterprises.
The company will stay under the direction of Brener, functioning as an independent division bearing the OpenZeppelin brand. Brener is set to answer directly to S&P Global Ratings President Yann Le Pallec.
“Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks, and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain,” remarked Yann Le Pallec. “As digital assets and tokenized markets continue to mature, OpenZeppelin’s technology and expertise will complement our smart contract and onchain technology risk assessment capabilities, giving traditional financial institutions and DeFi-native companies alike the confidence to build and transact in this new environment.”
The monetary conditions of the acquisition were kept private, and the transaction is still pending standard closing conditions. S&P Global communicated that the agreement is not anticipated to cause a significant effect on its financial performance.
