ByteDance Ltd., the creator of TikTok, has finalized a $29.6 billion credit facility alongside more than twenty-four banking institutions as the enterprise scales up its artificial intelligence initiatives, Bloomberg noted on Monday, referencing an individual familiar with the matter.
This financing secured by the Chinese firm stands as the second-largest in the Asian market for this year, trailing only SoftBank’s $40 billion credit arrangement secured in March. Participating financial institutions include the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China alongside HSBC, as stated by Bloomberg.
Reports indicate ByteDance intends to utilize the capital for general corporate operations while advancing its artificial intelligence goals. Previously, ByteDance secured $10.8 billion from approximately twenty financial entities back in 2024. Furthermore, Bloomberg reported in May that the organization contemplated expenditures reaching up to $70 billion throughout 2026 to support the construction of data centers and additional artificial intelligence infrastructure.
This financial backing demonstrates robust confidence in the Asian technology heavyweight, which held an estimated valuation of $550 billion in February and remains a key leader in artificial intelligence technological advancement, according to Bloomberg’s coverage. Initially, reports indicated ByteDance sought a credit facility totaling $20 billion.
Announcements regarding this financing arrive alongside recent appeals from Elon Musk, Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, and OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman urging deceleration within the artificial intelligence competition due to safety apprehensions. Their statements followed the departure of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who warned of a potential risk that artificial intelligence could cause human extinction—a viewpoint subsequently supported by Anthropic alignment supervisor Evan Hubinger, who estimated the probability of such an apocalyptic outcome at 10%.
Additionally, this credit announcement coincides with projections from a Bitcoin Suisse publication anticipating that top United States hyperscalers will allocate upwards of $800 billion during the current year and surpassing $1 trillion by 2027.
Based on information from Bloomberg, twenty-eight banking institutions took part in the three-year credit arrangement for ByteDance, which includes an option to prolong the term up to five years.
ByteDance is borrowing at a margin of 0.68 percentage points over the standard benchmark rate, pricing that highlights strong financial backing and creditor trust in the enterprise, the report observed. By comparison, the credit facility for SoftBank was established at 2.5 percentage points above the benchmark, demonstrating the elevated risk profile perceived by lenders in that transaction.
At the time of publication, neither ByteDance nor HSBC had issued a reply to CoinDesk’s inquiries seeking verification.
